Hammer prices for Knebel’s auction lots
Back to Josef Milz now for 2018 auslese goldkapsel
Knebel’s Auslese is down 42% for bottles and 10% for halves.
I think this is just a further reflection of how demand for Auslese has dropped as interest in Kabinett has surged. In the secondary market, I can attest to the fact that recent vintages of Auction Kabinett and Spatlese sell for very good prices- but it can be challenging to sell Auslesen. In any event, a great opportunity for Auslese lovers- this is by all accounts a very fine wine.
I see this in the U.S. retail market too. I’m seriously thinking of backfilling on one of my favorite producers, whose auslesen are at or slightly lower in price than recent release kabinett.
No prior year results for comparison, but as with Knebel a further indication that, aside from Egon Muller, Auslese is not currently as favored in the open market as its brethren on the drier end of the spectrum.
Another very nice deal for Auslese fans- 1998 was a spectacular vintage for the sweeter Pradikats.
Whoever got the ‘98 got a very nice wine, showed really well this morning
Hammer prices for AJ Adam’s lots
I nailed the hammer price on the Goldtropfchen Spatlese in 750 mL, got 4 bottles.
I wish I had read the lot list a bit closer. I should have been all over that wine.
Up next is JJ Prum’s only lots (Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese), not sure it will break the record from last year but should command a high price.
AJ Adam turns in a solid performance. Kabinett and Spatlese up 5 Euro each in bottle from last year, or 16% and 13%, respectively. Magnums of Kabinett up 1% at 101, with Spatlese magnums up 11% to 150 Euro.
A nice bump from 2021, but for anyone who has not tried Adam in a while- note that the residual sweetness of many early vintages is gone, and recently the wines have become beautifully restrained and structured- yet losing none of the aromas and sensations of exoticism that are so uniquely Adam.
I am sitting here right now with a glass of the 2020 Hofberg Spatlese opened last week (and one of his best wines I have ever had), and wishing I had bid on even more 2022 Adam than I won.
Tom, thanks for this perspective. The last vintage of Adam I tried was ‘18 (kabis & späts). I found them to be nice but not especially distinctive, so haven’t tried the last few vintages. Is this change you note that recent?
For me, the Haag Kabi was the best of the morning tasting. I thought it might exceed last year’s prices, so this is quite the steel.
Prum’s Spatlese is down 9% in bottle and up 31% in magnum for a more normal result this year volume-wise across the various formats, but still with no magnum premium in play.
Given the vintage reputation compared to 2021, this is a more typical result than in recent years where prices were moving up almost constantly. But given this was the only wine offered, it is suggestive that there may be downward pressure on all of the higher dollar wines.
My vintage gap is something along the lines of 2010 jumping to 2019, so afraid I cannot be helpful with the 2018s. The 2020 Hofberg Spatlese is still out there- that is the one I would suggest trying as it is really off the charts good.
it would be awesome if someone made a way for normal folks like me to participate live. prices would really go nuts if they had a live DTC model somehow
Believe me, I’d love to go in person one year. Is it invite only?
Up now is Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch
You can sign up directly with the VDP but if you speak with a commissioner then they can get you a seat for free
