The 2023 VDP Grosser Ring - Mosel Wine Auction Results Thread

I missed the final bid on the 3L, anyone else getting really bad livestream?

1,250 Euro. The feed is running a bit ragged right now.

A solid performance for Milz to start off the auction.

Last year only magnums of Felsenkopf (60) and a single double magnum of Apotheke were offered.

This year, the selection was expanded to include the next bottle size down, and the same number of incumbent formats were sold.

Despite the significant supply increase, the incumbent offerings were up 7% and 4% for Felsenkopf and Apotheke, respectively.

Hammer price for magnums of the Lambertskirch GG was 320 Euro. This feed is a disaster.

Last year, Lauer’s offering of magnums and bottles of his GG was not aligned with the typical approach (there were a great many magnums relative to bottles) and the result was bottles at 180 Euro and magnums at 200 Euro.

This year, the offering was more traditionally aligned, and buyers decided that last year’s bottle price was a better bellwether than the magnum price, and so when you consider the above- this year’s performance is even stronger than the numbers suggest.

Bottles flat at 180 Euro, same as last year.

Magnums up 60%, or 120 Euro, for a hammer of 320- and Lauer had to bump the quantity 20% to 15 magnums to keep the price from going even higher. Well done!

Five minute break announced to address issues with the internet feed.

That aside, things are moving along fast this year! 30 minutes in, and even with the internet issues 6 of 75 lots have been hammered. Last year it was about this time before the bidding even got started. Aside from the more efficient tone, it is clear the auctioneer and commissionaires are getting into a very good flow with each other, and it happened pretty quickly when you consider the complexities of this type of auction.

And we are back now and into the first Kabinett - from Schloss Lieser.

Schloss Lieser Graacher Domprobst Kabinett in 750 mL went for 56 Euro

That was a steal, for me the 2nd best Kabi of the tasting. Curious what the Doctor will do!

Onto the 3L now, damn they’re moving fast!

Doctor Spatlese up next

Lots of interest in those double mags, only 3 bottles! Now curious what the one 6L bottle will go for.

Spoke with the commissioner. They have quite some long term professional customers that decided to sit out this year’s auction, as they thought the price quality ratio starting getting out of whack. Also missing some familiar faces in the room.

@Arjan_Stavast who isn’t there?

6L ultimately went for 3550 Euro! Up next is Clemens Busch.

Hammer prices for Clemens Busch’s lots

Schloss Lieser offerings this year for Kabinett and Spatlese mirrored last year in terms of the wine sold and the formats offered.

Kabinett down 7% in bottle
Doctor Spatlese down 22% in bottle- but still settling at a very solid 175 Euro

Large format Kabinett down 20% in magnum and 22% in 3L, but the Spatlese was up strongly in large format- 11% for the 3 liters closing at 1,010 each, and an impressive 3,550 for the 3L- up 18%.

12 lots in and no real definitive trends just yet- though there are early signs Spatlese will be very strong this year. Looks like today could be all over the map. One interesting side note- the large formats in small quantities still are seeing a good bit of time to sort out with all the active bidding. So there are plenty of enthusiastic buyers here.

I don’t see a few Asian buyers I met last year and also notice the absence of a few very large German buyers

Knebel up next, with first auslese-level and up lot so far. Curious with this vintage what kinds of hammer prices we’ll see with the stickies.

A solid performance from Clemens -Busch.

Kabinett down just 2% from 45 Euro to 43 Euro.

First Spatlese Marienburg offering hammering for 75 Euro which is an exceptionally good performance for a first appearance. Among other recent first-time Spatlese offerings, I think only Schloss-Lieser Doctor outdid that, and that was in the 2017 Auction of the 2016 vintage.
