I’m dying. This is my wedding year and I just figured it’d go for wayyy more. Lesson learned.
I’m pretty pleased with today, got nearly everything I wanted except the Loersch BA. That was for my kids anyway . Lots of interesting wines today and many good values.
Brian & Tom thank you for doing this commentary! Really great!
And just like that, the final lot of the day- lone magnum of 2009 Molitor TBA**- is at 9,000 Euro just to get going. The record of a couple of hours ago is already shattered.
I think folks were keen to get home, normally this would have finished more than An hour ago alreadya
Final lot of the day, incredible. As much as I questioned yesterday what someone would do with an 18L bottle of kabinett, I ask that more of the TBA magnum today.

A lovely array of stickies this year- all of them BAs and TBAs.
It is very difficult to have a comparative discussion here since the selection not only varies from year to year, but also the selection of vintages- as these wines are typically released at least 2 years after harvest. There was only one direct comp- and that is Carl Loewen’s BA which sold for 155 last year, and 142 this year for a drop of 8%.
Overall, I was surprised at how low some of the prices were. And frankly, next year I plan to do whatever is necessary to bid live- because there are 3 lots in this last section I would have been bidding on today at those prices. But I will be happy with my pair of Carl Loewen BA and call it a day.
As for the Molitor at 9,510- let’s see what tomorrow’s press releases say, but I have to think this is the record price for a lot at the Bernkasteler.
A solid performance overall today, and not quite as soft in the Auslese range as was the case at the Mosel. But still there are many bargains to be had, as well as a whole lot of really nice and interesting wines one can test drive without having to worry too much about the cost.
I hope everyone got what they wanted today- see you tomorrow morning for the Nahe sale! My big question for tomorrow is will things be as they always have been, or will the Nahe also- as happened today- take a few baby steps toward to the new general approach embraced by the Mosel?
If you get both, the number of guests required to burn through an 18L of Kabinett seems about the right number of people to make it through a magnum of TBA. Riesling theme for the next BerserkerFest?
That was mostly Tom and Arjan, I’ve mostly been boosting my post count.
Modesty! But Arjan i appreciate your commentary as well!
How did Jakob Schneider taste?
Had to dig up my notebook. I liked it quite a bit as did others in the room. Fairly high acidity with a pronounced note of lemon peel. Best of the GGs together with Gessinger to my taste.
Thank you Arjan. It would have been nice to have, but I am hesitant to believe it is worth the price difference to the regular bottling €38 (including VAT) vs. €22.
I’m a huge fan of Jakob wines and while I haven’t been able to taste the auction wine (yet ) long time dealer Pinard de Picard seemed to be very impressed by it. I actually thought it would go higher as the hammer price is still way cheaper than any GG from Nahe. Edit: it was also only non-vdp auction wine that one could bid via PdP.
Happy to make your acquaintance Johan, I too am a longtime Weingut Jakob Schneider devotee!
Interesting how much more the magnums went for compared to the 750 ml bottles, but that had to do with the minimum number of magnum bottles.
The thing is I’m not a “collector”, I just appreciate a good wine to drink (after proper aging), so I’m always reluctant to pay these premiums, but nonetheless interested in the wines.
I am a regular purchaser of A. J. Adams’ wines as well and he only recently started putting up a couple of offerings on the VDP auctions. I expect Jakob Schneider’s wines will follow the same trajectory as Adams’ wines.
I’m not a collector either I just drink a lot :D. I was very interested to taste how much (if any) better the “Über´m Häusche” is compared to other dry wines of Schneider and also wanted to support the estate which still keeps prices really low. As was the case with Würtzberg also. I have not tasted the auction kabinett but I have followed them since their name was “Dr. Siemens” and been really pleased how much the quality of wines have rose under the new generation! Their 2021 & 2022 lineups were / are really solid but somehow they still fly completely under the radar. To be honest many BK Ring auction wines have not been that interesting (still a couple of years ago auction wines were usually available after auctions because they did not sell) but I’m seeing some positive changes here.
Adam joined to VDP just a couple of years ago and there has been auction wines since then. Schneider is not part of any organization so let’s see if BK Ring continues to give them opportunity to be a part of auctions.
I was disappointed when A. J. Adams joined the VDP, I was very happy with his wines prior to conforming to the VDP regulations.
I hope Jakob doesn’t allow himself to become ensnared in any organisation. Although I appreciate that the Bernkasteler Ring has extended an invitation to partake in the auction, I hope with no strings attached.
