Well, since the cat is out of the bag as to her participation this year, Sonoe has done the same with me the past 3 BDs. Seems @Noah_C and I were posting our notes at the same time Saturday evening. I think we both added the same wine to the database simultaneously. Here are my impressions.
- 2022 Six Cloves Wines Chardonnay Linda Vista Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District (1/20/2024)
Bottle was given to me by the winemaker for the purpose of tasting and giving my impressions in a tasting note.
Whole cluster pressed into 19% new French oak barrels for fermentation, followed by 9 months of aging sur lie. 13.5% abv
A delicate pour reveals a very pale straw color, inviting anticipation of the journey ahead. The aromatics begin with a tropical allure, accented by a distinctive banana note. As you delve deeper, gardenia petals unfold, followed by the enticing essence of honeyed green tea. A harmonious dance of tartness and sweetness unfolds on the palate. Layers of flavor include zesty lemon curd and crisp Granny Smith apple, complemented by a velvety, creamy texture that adds a luxurious dimension. Despite the creaminess, the wine maintains a light and agile profile, accompanied by an edgy, steely minerality that adds an intriguing depth.
While previous vintages displayed a leaner profile, the 2022 vintage beckons a different companion. This Chardonnay seems to yearn for a decadent pairing, envisioning the creamy indulgence of triple cream brie, such as Mt Tam, spread on a freshly baked sourdough baguette.

- 2022 Six Cloves Wines Pinot Noir Buf-Wehr Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (1/20/2024)
Bottle was given to me by the winemaker for the purpose of tasting and giving my impressions in a tasting note.
50% whole cluster fermented, Pommard clone, aged 9 months in neutral French oak. 13.1% abv
The wine presents itself with a radiant ruby-red hue. Delicate aromas of cola, red cherry, Santa Rosa plum, and a hint of cinnamon greet you. Upon the first sip, a symphony of roasting spices captivates the palate, creating a delightful harmony with the semi-rich fruit. Black cherry and red currant take center stage, showcasing a well-structured flavor profile. The medium-bodied nature is complemented by well balanced tannins and acidity, culminating in a cohesive experience.
While the wine is enjoyable now, it holds promise for further development with aging or extended decanting. This is a companion to be savored with a wonderful meal, particularly lamb.
After re-corking at cellar temperature and revisiting a couple of days later, the wine displayed a subtle transformation. The fruit receded on the nose, making way for intriguing notes of forest floor and fir needles. This savory edge enhances the wine's complexity, reaffirming the choice of pairing with lamb.

- 2022 Six Cloves Wines Zinfandel Castanon Vineyards - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (1/20/2024)
Bottle was given to me by the winemaker for the purpose of tasting and giving my impressions in a tasting note. Partial whole cluster ferment, aged in 20% new French oak. 13.5% abv.
Pours a brilliant magenta and exhibits a beautiful nose of bramble fruit, dried persimmon and spice. The fun continues with a delicate palate of lively sweet zinberry and a red volcanic soil note reminiscent of the renowned Monte Rosso vineyard. What really makes this Zin special is how the fruit is complimented by a well balanced support of acid and tannin structure. A very complete wine, it comes at you from all angles with a warm spice adding depth and complexity while the firm tannins speak to its age-worthiness. Iām a Zin head and I appreciate the nostalgic charm of this old school version thatās sure to impress for years to come.
