Selling Wine For Charity

Hi: I’m new to the site. I’d like to sell some of my wine to contribute to a charity, Special Operations Warrior Foundation. It provides college scholarships and other valuable services to children of Armed Forces Special Operators killed in the line of duty.

Is this possible? I read that I may be able to do it on Wine Berserkers, but have no idea how to do so. I have ‘13, ‘15, ‘16, ‘17, and ‘18 bottles of MacDonald Cab, some nice 10-20 year old Brunello Riservas, 10-30 year old Bordeaux, etc.

I’d definitely appreciate any input.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Ken, our rules are that one must have a 25-post minimum before posting a for sale listing, but since this is for a respectable charity, I’ll allow it. Edit your post accordingly so you have the details shown.

Great cause.

You could just list them here with price / provenance details and then donate the proceeds directly.

Alternatively, you could break all the bottles into separate posts and do it auction style.

Thanks very much, Todd. Would this forum be the best place to list them, or is there another specific area where I should do so? Sorry for the questions. I definitely appreciate the help.

Ken

Thanks a lot, Gavin

Would the proceeds transfer directly to the charity in both cases? Or would whoever buys them make payment arrangements with me? Sorry for the dumb questions. I obviously haven’t done anything like this before.

If I were you, I would consult a tax attorney on the best way to handle that.

As for how to sell them on WineBerserkers, I would suggest reviewing some of the posts on Commerce Corner and find a format/style that works for you. Good luck!

Thanks, Patrick. Will do. I had not even thought about the tax-related aspect of it. I appreciate your input & help.

Not dumb.
We have several tax attorneys on the board, I am not one of them.

however, it might be simplest to for you to receive all the payments and then to just donate the cash yourself.

Sounds good. Thanks again.:folded_hands:

I would also post a photo of all the bottles together (front and backs) in the posting

Will definitely do that. Thanks for the help!

Yes, you can just amend the first post if you want, make that your listing/offer

Will do. Everyone who has replied has been so helpful. I didn’t know what type of response, if any, to expect from my 1st post. I’m definitely grateful for all of the input & suggestions. Have a good night.:folded_hands:

Well, the only reason I saw the post is because someone (rightfully, technically) reported it, since it didn’t comply with the regulations, which is why I 1) moved it here and 2) posted how I’ll allow it because it has a charitable component.

(plus, this might be the only way some Berserkers will EVER get MacDonald)

As far as the MacD goes, I may be able to help down the road, if you have any friends who would like some. I’m going to start with 2 or 3 bottles of it…and maybe a case or so of other bottles that I like a lot. I have zero idea of what to ask for them, other than what the current going retail prices are.

Welp, you might want to check aftermarket pricing, or at least for the MacDonalds offer some form of timed auction, which I can help with, i.e. allowing bids up to a certain time on a certain day then the thread automatically closes

Sure. I really appreciate the help. I’ll take out a couple of MacD bottles, maybe a ‘16 & ‘17, and photograph them. Also thinking about an auction for a birchwood box vertical (‘13, ‘14, ‘15) of Pulido-Walker Melanson Vineyard. And maybe a ‘14 3-pack of The Debate (To Kalon, Missouri Hopper, and Dr. Crane).

Would you maybe have a few minutes tomorrow to walk me through the auction set-up? I did a few on ebay…like 15 years ago…so I should be a quick (probably not) study.:winking_face_with_tongue:

Yeah, I’m about to start the Zoom online session with Marcus Goodfellow, but I have time tomorrow - email me at todd@wineberserkers.com with a phone number and some available times
