Seeking White Burgundy recs w/ “piña colada / citrus cream” profile

Hey all - looking for recommendations (and hunting tips) for White Burgundy that hits a specific flavor/profile I love:

  • ripe tropical (pineapple / piña colada vibe, sometimes coconut-ish)

  • lemon curd / citrus cream

I’ve had this a few times in the past from higher-end bottles in the Meursault / Montrachet orbit, but I sadly don’t remember the exact wines.

I’m not trying to chase DRC/Montrachet pricing — ideally looking fo some smart buys and producers/villages/1ers where this profile shows up reliably. Say $40–$120 (but I’m open if there’s a killer bottle slightly above that).

Cheers

I get lemon curd and cold honey citrus creamsicle from lots of older Burg. 99 Leflaive Chevy had that in spades. PYCM is doing that as well. But as far as tropical notes and citric cream, I find that way more in Cristal than Burgundy.

Domaine Matrot?

That would be great if you like sherry and butterscotch notes.

Any reason you’re focusing on white burg for this specific profile? Sounds more like a chardonnay from a warmer climate. This profile is readily available in CA, as one example Au Bon Climat chards with ~10 years of age on them, which you can get for $60 or less.

The Guffens-Heynen Pouilly Fuisse wines are rather rich and show tropical flavors when young.

Coconut is a flavor that can be related to cooperage, I used to see it pretty frequently in wines raised in Troncais forest barrels. For the lemon curd and citrus cream (cream specifically), I would look to warmer vintages with producers who tend to pick a little bit quicker. The warm vintage will give you the creaminess, but you need it picked quick enough not to go into apples and pears. The pineapple/Pina Colada aspect seems similar, but I do think you’ll be looking at reasonably high-end producers for that. And as Justin said, maybe easier to find from a different region.

I find these tropical flavors more often in Riesling

The profile you are looking for seems to me more like white Rhone territory

Agree, I seem to find pineapple in the Macon. Andre Bonhomme Vire Clesse comes to mind at a very reasonable price. Obviously not going to be the full blast tropical rainforest you’ll get from some Napa chardonnays, but it’s there.

I think there are riper and less acidic White Burgs out there. It’s just most Burg nuts are not chasing these characteristics.

I have seen a few at the riper end such as:-

22 Sauzet Haute Cote de Beaune

20 Drouhin Macon Villages

Good advice here. I agree with the Guffens rec and even found it in a couple of Verget wines. Consider Francois Carrilon as well. Look in warmer vintages, especially if you can find them with age. A recent 2015 Dauvissat Preuses was loaded with pineapple flavors.

@Marcus_Goodfellow ‘s post is spot on, as well as @scamhi ‘s point - I searched my TNs for pineapple, and of 16 uses, Chardonnay and Riesling were tied at 7 (one chenin and one SB)

Viré‑Clessé From Thevenet, either Domaine de la Bongran or Domaine de Roally.

Just the only region I’ve experienced the profile so far, not opposed to other spot as well!

Every time I’ve had PYCM, it’s been pretty lean and super reduced. Lots more matchstick than pina colada.

Awesome rec’s thank you both!

Great response thank you, any rec’s on other regions? No closed to the idea!

Thanks for the reply John never have to look far for it in Riesling

So what wines did you try with these characteristics!

Not white Burgundy but try some German spatlese or auslese. All sorts with that exact profile.
