  • A sampler of our special project of making a Méthode Champenoise sparkling wine from the very dark red Souzão grape from Portugal. • 2017 Souzão - Still wine version of this very pigmented and complex variety - 2 bottles
    • 2019 Sparkling Souzão - Dark red, dry, slightly tannic, exotically fruity and with bubbles! - 2 bottles

Luchessi Cabernet Sauvignon Vertical 2 Pack: 2017 & 2018 vintages - $120

  • We’d argue that the Santa Cruz Mountains makes some of the best Cabernet in the New World! Luchessi Vineyard is right next to the famous Montebello Ridge area and is an incredibly steep and rugged vineyard with dry-farmed, head-trained vines. It produces a rich and rugged Cab that stands up to hearty foods and also cellars for decades. We are honored to work with this vineyard and are excited to share a slightly older vintage that can certainly age much, much longer (or be enjoyed now!). This bundle includes our 2017 and 2018 vintages!

Luchessi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Grand Cru Cabernet Sauvignon Two Pack - $250 (discounted from $300) A highly allocated new project!

In our almost five decades of making Cabernet Sauvignon from the Santa Cruz Mountains, there are vineyards we work with planted in the 1970s that have what we believe to be the equivalent of Grand Cru status. We made very limited quantities of these wines and have gone to great effort to showcase the unique character of these historic sites. Aged in custom barrels made only for us just for this project.

  • 2017 Bates Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon - Originally planted 1972 and is at the very southern end of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. We are still enjoying the 1978 from this vineyard!
  • 2017 Staiger Cabernet Sauvignon - Planted on a steep hillside above Boulder Creek by Paul and Majorie Staiger in 1973. They passed it to us when they retired from winemaking and we are extremely honored to work with this historic vineyard.

Preview Day special Library Wine Vertical offers:

  • Branciforte Creek Pinot Library Vertical: 2005 - 2006 - 2007 - Three Pack - $350

  • 100% Pommard clone Pinot Noir made in a very old-world style from the cool climate Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. Full of flavor - rich spice, bright red cherries, damp earth, tart acidity, and layers of darker fruit. These wines can cellar for 40 odd years and are excellent with food. Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir is what we were founded for!

  • McDowell Durif Library Vertical: 2003, 2004 & 2005 - 3 Pack - $180

  • Durif - McDowell Valley Vineyard - McDowell Valley AVA - Mendocino County

  • We worked with these vines planted in 1948 from this historic vineyard from 2003 until its sale in 2013. We always labeled ours with the correct French name for what almost everyone else in California calls “Petite SIrah”. But Petite Sirah is an incorrect arbitrary name invented for marketing and we’ve been just iconoclastic enough to have had a Durif on our brand since 1977! This vertical represents around 2 decades of aging in the bottle and showcases 3 vintages that have aged beautifully and are basically ready to drink now. They will surprise you by how youthful they still seem.

More info

Through the years we have intentionally stashed away multiple cases of each release we thought would improve with age.

Some of the earliest wines we sold a long time ago now, but we had four pallets (over 200 cases) of what I’ll call “mid-aged” wines, all wrapped up and aging. We kept thinking these are too young to release, but we’ve had to finally admit that wines from the late 1990’s through the first decade of the 2000’s are actually mostly over 20 years old. So it’s time.

There are too many to list here, and in some cases there are only a few bottles available. But we are happy to send you a list of the wines, the prices and how sales and pick-up of the wines can work. If interested, send us an email at info@santacruzmountainvineyard.com.

Winery History

Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard was founded in 1974 by a man named Ken Burnap. He had a passion for Pinot Noir that led him on a journey to discover the best location in California to produce Pinot Noir that would be equal to that of Burgundy. After a lot of searching, he settled on the Santa Cruz Mountains. When he discovered that his ideal Pinot location was a plot of land currently for sale, he couldn’t resist (decision making aided by a bottle of celebratory Champagne). In 1975, Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard’s first vintage of Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir was released (a wine that is still drinking beautifully out of our cellar today). In 1979 Ken hired our current winemaker, Jeff Emery (age 20 at the time), to help with cellar work and vineyard management. An old school apprenticeship was established and Ken and Jeff worked together for 25 years until Ken’s retirement. At that point, Jeff found he couldn’t possibly get a “real job”, thus he took over the brand in 2004.

The Zayante Zinfandel is such an incredible zin. Amazingly fresh and delicate.

My favorite winemaker! Amazing QPR. My “house” wines for many years.

The web site is not accepting the BD15 code. Anyone else having that problem?

Hoping to double up on the Durif offer.

The 2019 Durif Machado Vineyard was crazy good for being on the young side.

Thanks @J_Patrick_Lynch . And these offerings are a good bit older and as good as Machado Vineyard was these McDowell Valley old vine offerings have another layer to them.

We are looking into the code issue. It actually should be BD16 as we hadn’t edited the posting text properly but have done so now. One thing to point out though, is you only need the code for shipping outside of CA. If you are shipping within CA that sales platform automatically will apply the free shipping. Only use BD16 for free shipping if you aren’t in CA .

Still getting the discount code issue. As a recovering IT guy, I can’t help but wonder if it’s because the offers are marked as not eligible for discount. Regardless, I’m there for Quinta Cruz once you get it fixed.

BD16 not BD15

Yes, as indicated up above. I’ve tried both.

Sent you an email on the McDowell Durif vertical

Just tried to place an order for the Iberian varieties 4 pack; however, the online system gives me an error related to the Souzao included in that mix (see screenshot below) – and then tells me the error must be fixed before I can add CC info and place the order.

Can you advise how I should proceed? Thanks.

Just went in and fixed this - please refresh and give it a try and let me know if you are able to proceed now.

Thanks Jeff, my order was placed successfully for both the Quinta Cruz packs. I love all your wines, but those wines are special for me.

Jeff, Thanks for the prompt response. Tried placing the order again, and it went through with no issues. I love those “lesser known” Iberian varieties, with a special affinity for Graciano!

Any chance you’ll be offering any other indigenous white Iberian varieties in the future?

Michael

Thank you for the order @M_Mager. As to other interesting Iberian whites I would LOVE to do more of them but finding growers adventurous enough to plant them and sell them is a different story. I’d love to make an Encruzado for instance!

Love Iberian varieties and so excited to see another Arinto (I make it as well) - ordered the Iberian 4-pack and the 2-pack of the Luchessi Cab as well - cheers!

Thanks so much @DirkN ! That’s great to know someone else out there is working with this fantastic varietal. I find they age beautifully too. I’ve had old ones from Portugal, 10 to 15 years old, and they present like a fine aged Riesling with all that great machine oil character.
