San Antonio?

I will likely be going to a conference in San Antonio during the last week of October.

I was there in 1993. I remember the Riverwalk, the Alamo, and the Alamo Dome. Are there other things to do there?

Any restaurant recos? Anything from cheap BBQ to fancy whatever.

Are there any Berserkers in the San Antonio area?

Crazy-looking place outside of town. Crazy good smoked prime rib. Wine list doesn’t look as good as when we were there. Just a unique place.

Thanks Andrew. When they mention “Texas Oysters” are they talkin regular oysters or gonads?

Those be nads.

As for things to do…the mercado, river walk is way improved and expanded since you have been there. Sea World and Fiesta Texas are also there.

Didn’t get 'em. Would be more inclined to order ‘prairie oysters’ than sea ones shipped from the Gulf in July though.

I thought the 'nads were Rocky Mt.?

(crap - I’ve eaten Texas oysters!!!)

MMMM yummie a mouth full of sheep balls. We have them here as well. Some people just don’t believe it when you laugh at them as they dip those fried nuggests of joy. [shock.gif]

mountain oysters are balls…I guess texas might refer to gulf coast.

I’ve noticed that by looking at maps on the web. I really liked the River Walk the last time I was there. Thanks.

Any good BBQ you’ve heard of there?

La Reve is a must. As good a restaurant as you will find anywhere in Texas.

Lots of good BBQ…dependant on how far you are willing to drive.

For commercial, County Line is fairly good and is close to downtown.

+1

Not food, but there is a beautiful Japanese tea garden that was constructed inside an old quarry. Worth a trip.

I will likely not have a car there. Looks like there is a new one on the River Walk. I ate at County Line in Austin a long time ago. I certainly enjoyed it.

Is there something more authentic or better that you would recommend? If it’s not too far, I could take a cab, or try to find someone there who has a car and a taste for BBQ. I’m really more interested in food that hard to get up here. Texas BBQ is definitely one of those.

As tempted as I am to make a joke about the best French food in Texas, I will just say that I am more interested in “native” food that I can’t get up here. Also, it is unlikely I will be able to convince anyone at this conference to go to an expensive restaurant.

Now if the Berserkers from Dallas want to take a drive down, then anything is game for me! That seems very far to me, but I do recall folks from College Station saying that they drive to Houston for dinner, so maybe . . .

It’s a tourist trap, but I think that everyone should go to Mi Tierra when in town. I like the food there and it is definitely representative of San Antonio Tex Mex cuisine. There are better places, but the atmosphere there is what makes it.

Ken,

Would love to make it down there, but I will be getting back from a week in Napa that weekend.

Too far unless you have a rental and do it on a weekend day but I consider Cooper’s in Llano to be the best BBQ in Texas.

Up next to the Quarry is a restaurant called Paesanos. Their Shrimp Paesano is excellent. There’s another location on the River Walk that’s not owned by the same people and not as good.

Too bad. Another time! [berserker.gif]
