Nope. It’s just that it’s a minimum of an hour and half from where you’re staying. I didn’t think you’d want to do a 3 hour round trip on a weekday evening just to eat dinner. That’s all.
I fully agree with Le Reve if you can make it, no its not “native”, but a damn fine restaurant in ANY city. If you want a little cheaper and not as upscale Le Reve has a semi raw bar right next door called Sandbar, but you will need to check the hours of operation.
I have to disagree with Joe on Paesano’s, I heard so much about that place, but I think it has gone down hill…definitely dont salt your food there because it will have plenty.
When in SA you have to do the cool non touristy S. Texas things…If you have done the Alamo, stop and have a drink and cigar at the Menger (Teddy R. and Roughriders)…see if the VFW on the new section of the Riverwalk has anything gong on, that can be an experience…Blue Star Brewing Company if the music is good…try Paloma Blanco for tex mex definitely one of my favorites…get breakfast tacos at all costs, Lula’s downtown is decent and Las Palapas is also good.
I disagree with Phillip and Glenn …La Reve is as good a restaurant as you will find anywhere! Seriously, we had a simply spectacular meal there last year for our anniversary. It is a must…
No problem there. It’s been a little while since I’ve been and your experience is probably a little more recent than mine. Was this the one out by the Quarry?
For Mexican, your chances are great wherever you go in SA.
But, Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery is good, and also a few blocks from the RiverWalk.
Also, Cielito Lindo on the north San Antonio is very good, and for a good hole-in-the-wall with great barbacoa, try El Milagrito.
For no-fuss, quick and easy BBQ, try Rudy’s, Bill Millers, or Gradys. (I am more in the Bill Miller’s camp, but a lot of people prefer Rudy’s, both are chains). Enjoy your trip!
I was in SA a few days ago, went to Mi Tierra where I was pleasantly surprised, first of all I am back in the world of people whose life doesn’t stop at 9pm and since it’s my case 99% of the time I sure appreciated that. The food was actually quite good (I ordered George’s plate, a combo of Guacamole, Enchiladas, some tacos + beans and rice) and the jumbo margarita was nice too (I took the higher-end one and it passed my quality test), it was cheap too which is always nice. Plus the ambiance was definitely there. There are quite a few tourists but from what I’ve seen quite a lot of locals too.
Next day went to Boudros for lunch, good food and good limeade, not pricey at all for lunch. And to Rosario’s for dinner, the food was really good (got the grilled tacos with carnitas), shared my table with a couple from Louisiana (it was Friday night and the place was packed full), their quesadillas and chicken with chipotle sauce looked great too and they said they enjoyed it a lot. The margaritas sucked, though, both the basic and the higher-end one.
I liked the town, the size is just right for me, the traffic being manageable and people aren’t fighting with shotguns over parking spots. And tons of nice restaurants in a nice setting - the Riverwalk, which I think gives a real soul to this city.
If you are looking for good food with a good wine list, look no farther
than the Grey Moss Inn. It is on the northwest side of town and at
least 10 miles out. If you have a rental car you will have a great meal.
However, be advised that there is a cop that sits just outside the
restaurant waiting for speeders and he is tough. Look at their wine
list online and see if it what you want.
