Gonna be in Austin for a conference, anyone want to get together one of these evenings and open some bottles? Not sure what options there are in TX for this given no BYO.
I’m in San Antonio. Might, just might be able to do Sunday night, but kind of a hard maybe.
The law in Tx is that if you don’t have a full liquor license (e.g. only serve beer & wine), then corkage can legally be allowed. There are a handful of excellent restaurants in SA that are very friendly to wine drinkers, and I’m sure the same exists in Austin, but I’m not familiar with them.
Care to come up a night early and have a killer Saturday tasting with @J.Durham, et. al? Stay at the Emma and have dinner at our club Art of Cellaring? I bet we can get a good crew together and have a blast…
That might work; we’ll probably want a car anyways so it probably wouldn’t be any harder to fly into and out of San Antonio. I’ll talk to Eileen about it.
I was meaning to start a thread on this as I added it to my calendar back on the other thread. I’m not oncall for once! JV, we should probably ask John Long about Austin locations. I just don’t know any there there.
BYO will be tough in SA on Sunday and Monday, as I think all the key restaurants are closed.
AoC (wine club/lounge in SA) can easily host a rather large gathering in a relaxed atmosphere on any night. We would just have to figure out the catering and make sure we reserve the room
I can potentially make it to Austin but that’s tougher.
I spoke to Eileen and we can probably make Saturday in SA work as that seems like it’s easiest for everyone, then we can just focus on conference stuff and bbq in Austin. What do you guys think would be the best option? I can bring some nice burgs for us to drink.
Are there Austin people on WB?
Pretty sure JV and I know all the SA people.
I changed the title accordingly; if you guys want to set something up for that Saturday that would be cool.
OK, sounds fun!
I think the big decision point will be what kind of event you want. If you want full service/restaurant it’ll limit us to a few places and probably no more than 8-10 people. And I think they are all $25-35/bottle corkage without a limit (maybe we can negotiate)
At AoC we can probably get up to 14 comfortably, but space for more. Probably best to cater something and there’s lots of options there. But could also be much less formal.
We’ll see what JZ thinks, he’s usually much more plugged in on the restaurant/service scene than me.
Oh I don’t care about it being formal and we don’t need it to be at a restaurant. Something casual and catered is fine. Do you guys usually do themed events? Could be fun to explore a vineyard or region if people are up for it, but dealers choice could be fun too.
Just seeing this - I’m thrilled to get a chance to meet in person!
I’ll go ahead and reserve our club for Saturday 5/16 and we can figure out dinner as it gets closer. One of my close friends is a chef and has done meals for tastings.
Knowing you guys, of course we’ll want to drink burgundy perhaps over dealer’s choice, but can do a more in depth study if you’re keen on an appelation or vineyard. Happy to let those details evolve. I’ll see what kind of a crew we can round up but this will be a chance to open fun and rare things, imo. Already thinking about some particular bottles…
I’m cool with deeper exploration of vineyards or just bringing cool burgundy, I have a pretty good selection of burgs. Let me know if there’s something specific you’re interested in drinking and we can figure something out! Chef sounds amazing!
You think Max can sample all the Burgs and STILL cook for everyone at the same time ![]()
Lol, yes he’s a professional
Or, if there was enough interest, we could just host the event at Petit Coquin
I totally forgot about Petit Coquin. Could be a good option if we have a large group that wants a restaurant experience. Just have to order double portions for me ![]()
We’ll have to see how many are interested.
Would love to meet the Texas crew. I’ll follow this thread and see if it’s possible to overlap
.
Oh man - I’ll get there if I can, but it’s a tough weekend because my son’s birthday is May 15. Keep me in the loop and I’ll do what I can.
Does he want to see the Alamo for his birthday? ![]()
OK bad news bears.. I overlooked not one, but two important obligations that we have that evening - a graduation event for my son and a retirement event for one of our close friends! Apologies for that @MChang - I should have double checked with my better half before suggesting the evening.
I see a few possible solves: 1) we could shift earlier and do a late lunch tasting 1-4ish or 2) I would be keen to drive up to Austin on Sunday to meet for a meal and a bottle or two or 3) y’all go for it and I can try to show up late, likely after dinner. Again, sincerely bummed and sorry to have overlooked this but hopefully we have a lot of time to adjust.
I’m fine with 1-4 if others will be ok with that time slot; it shouldn’t be hard to get in by 11ish; I would also be open for Sunday although it sounds like logistics could be more complicated.
I’ll touch base with Josh and ping some of the guys in our crew for their availability and let you know. Thanks for being so flexible. Sunday night can be the backup as I’m really looking forward to meeting.
