Note: I have found recent releases from old favorites such as Billecart-Salmon & Laurent-Perrier to be less exciting than they were over the last decade. YMMV
I will disagree a bit on the Billecart and Laurent-Perrier Roses. I thought they both went through a rough patch for quite a while, but the last 3 or 4 releases have been much better and more fruit driven. Still not as good as they were in their heyday, but a big step up from where they were 5-10 years ago when the wine was rather boring and the price was higher than it often is today. At least that is my experience.
It is possible that I am still working through old releases of those two. The B-S in particular really has shown strangely and recent releases while better in terms of fruit profile, seem out of balance in terms of really pronounced, bracing acidity.
The L-Ps I’ve had seem generic and one-dimensional.
If we could include European pricing, this list really opens up. Drappier Grande Sendree Rose is around $70 there and $150 at my local shop. Other small producer Roses that are $100+ in the US are normally quite a bit below $100 at cellar door too.
All of us in the US can only dream for that type of daily pricing.
Brad, I was about to chime in with Drappier Grande Sendree Rose, And since I’m signed in-
If you look hard in U.S. 70 per.
Also I’m a BIG fan of Bara Special Club Rose, the only SC rose!
Might be the base vintage too. It is tough to tell. I also may be giving both of them a good deal of credit as from 2004-2011/12 (not base years, but years the wine was sold), I was usually disappointed in both. I’m also happy to see both come down in price in my local area. For a while, both seemed to want to charge close to $100 for boring wine vs. the $50-$60 from era when they were quite nice and leaders in their category.
In most instances I prefer Billiot to Billecart and L-P for Rose. I find Delahaie to be variable from release to release so their inconsistency is an issue for me, but when they are on, they are very good right on release. Blind tasting is fun and good. I recently preferred a Roederer 2011 vintage Rose over the 2007 Cristal Rose. How something drinks now vs. how it will drink over time is hard to handle in a blind tasting.
Changing the subject back to the topic of Rose in general - as I type this, I am drinking a 2012 based Mathieu-Gandon Rose and it is dynamite stuff for less than $60. In general, anything 2012 is going to be great for Rose and Pinot Noir.
