I’ve yet to have anything from Reynvaan but currently have the 2023 Futures allocations available to purchase. I’ve been very intrigued from everything I’ve read and have enjoyed the few Cayuse wines I’ve had in the past. I know wine is subjective and everyone’s pallets are different but generally which of the 5 Syrah’s stand out the most? Reading reviews from several critics as a starting point, it looks like Stonessence and Foothills reserve might be the consistent stand outs. Hoping to get some feedback/opinions from those who enjoy these wines.
Hi, C.Crundwell. I definitely like those two bottlings from Reynvaan. I’d be curious to know what the price points are relative to the other bottlings. Do they have a straight appellation-level wine these days? If so and if there’s one Syrah that is priced lower than the others, I’d be inclined to buy more of that. In my experience, I don’t get a huge amount of variation between the different bottlings. They have a very distinct house style that is consistent across their Syrahs. What amazes me about their wines is the concentration without excess body, as well as great complexity even in young wines.
If an order was for six bottles, I’d probably get three of the higher-priced wines and three of the lower, if there is such a thing.
Thanks for the feedback Brandon. Really appreciate your thoughts. The options are the following…
2023 Stonessence 3 pack $345
2023 Foothills Reserve 3 pack $345
2023 The Contender 3 pack $300
2023 In the Hills 3 pack $300
2023 in the rocks 3 pack $300
2023 Mix 3 pack (in the rocks, in the hills, contender) $300
I haven’t had the Reynvaan Syrah’s in quite a few years, they were certainly cut from the same cloth as the Cayuse wines, different but slightly so. I would suggest that if this is your first offering that you try as many different bottlings as you can, and fine-tune your order with each passing year. My favorites about a decade ago were the Contender & In the Rocks…if that helps.
Thanks for the additional details. I’d definitely go with one or two of the Mix 3 and be done with it. I’m not sure (even though they’re only $15 per bottle more) the Stonessence or Foothills Reserve would be much better or different.
These also age and improve marvelously.
IMO. I would stick to the stronesense primarily. May get one other to dip into. Yes similar to Cayuse is some ways. Tons of funk needs to burn off. Could not drink them young. I m now drinking my 14 15 16 s with a little air. Drink best on the cooler side for a Syrah.
Having had all the wines, I find that the variations aren’t very big. Stonessence and In the Rocks would be my choice. Stonessence always seems to need the most time, so that’s why I’d get The Rocks too.
Total side note, he makes another wine called “MTR” Productions” that is Syrah that I find has a little more fruit. You can usually get a deal on those wine, and I find them as equal.
Also the whites he makes are fantastic
Pretty steep deal right now at First Bottle: 2018 Estate Syrah Foothills Reserve for $35/btl when you purchase 3. Shipping is included.
that is a crazy deal. Just bought a three pack. wow.
easy order in
It’s crazy. When I saw the email from first bottle this morning I jumped on it and got 6 bottles, plus no shipping; I thought there was a mistake or a catch, but it was really 35 per. Then I saw this post and it was montioned, Now they will definite be out of stock pretty quickly
And now it is . . .
If money is literally no object to you, feel free to ignore this comment, but I don’t think any of those wines represent good value at the list price. Just buy pre-aged bottles from WineBid for $50 per or something (tons available right now). For a wine as ageworthy as good Syrah is, the secondary market is the place to be, since these wines only depreciate in value.
Yeah, I got in for 3 earlier today. Everything I read made these sound right in my wheelhouse.
I think you are probably right, the list prices for many wines are inflated because they rarely sell for that price, but this was still a crazy deal…The $50 wine on WineBid becomes like $70+ once you add-in the buyers premium and tax and shipping…This First Bottle deal was like $38 all-in…
I’ve been buying and drinking them since the 2007 vintage. Yes they are very similar to Cayuse in style but I think that while Cayuse has a track record of more consistency, the very best examples of the Reynvaan syrahs have been better than those of Cayuse (keeping Bionic Frog out of the equation). For the longest time the Stonessence has been the top cuvee, with the In the Rocks is very close to it in quality, but in recent years the Foothills Reserve has been absolutely stunning. Unfortunately the prices have climbed pretty quickly and are probably only worth it if you adore the style.
Agree, but these wines are insane good for my taste. Easily obtainable and they stand up to game dishes, I purchase from winery and auction.
In The Hills has been the surprise for me most vintages, In The Rocks is my go-to year after year.
Oh for sure, these are lovely wines. I just don’t buy anything for $100 that I can get for $50. Merely a question of logistics! I think the Reynvaan Syrahs are among the best in the country.
More Reynvaan on crazy sale, this time on Last Bottle. 2018 In the Rocks Syrah for $39/btl (free shipping on 2+). Referral link for $10 off.
Edit: that went fast!
They are great wines, especially if you like Cayuse and other Rocks Syrahs, but buying off the list makes 0 sense to me when you can buy them aged and often much cheaper from auctions and such.
