Recent red burgundy vintage experiences

I am also sad they aren’t around anymore. I am lucky that I paid attention to John Gilman, who was praising the wines. I had a friend who was doing so as well. I think historically there were different assessments about which vineyards were more prestigious and some in Beaune may have been more highly evaluated. Josh’s comment about the 2009 he had may attest to this. I have a lot of 08s that I haven’t touched yet, but I wonder if many of them will be as good as the Cras that I had.
I haven’t had any of the Jadot/Gagey wines of the vineyards they purchased. I keep meaning to try them.

I’m pretty much out of the buying game, but I did buy some of the 2020 Jadot Beaune Cras on the recommendation of a friend (drwine). Not sure if these are the same vines or not. Haven’t tried any yet.

Jadot did buy the Chorey Cras vines after the untimely demise of the previous owner by suicide and I assume it is the same wine. It is supposedly excellent and still very affordable. I’ve never tasted it but would love to try it sometime.

Dinner last night really made me rethink 07; both wines had PLENTY of fruit, structure and finish. Most of the 07s I’d had before this (mostly DRC) felt somewhat light compared to other vintages but I didn’t get this at all last night. Both the MG Ruchottes and especially the Rousseau CSJ were absurdly good, among my WOTY.

Thanks. There is a tendency for the wine world to overlook some key sites in Beaune that can produce some very nice wines. I guess a good thing if one is looking to drink well for under $100 a bottle.

I had a 2013 Bertheau C-M Charmes and thought it was very nice, so apparently your experience was more about the producer than the vineyard in that year. But I didn’t pay much for the bottle (less than $50 all in) so I didn’t have inflated expectations.

I also had a 2011 Felettig C-M Carrieres, also obtained very inexpensively, that I enjoyed a lot too recently…

Question for the group. I’m keen to open a bottle of Cathiard Malconsorts soon, thinking one of the vintages 2014/15/16. Any recommendations which vintage is likely to show best?

Replying to this older post on 07s, I’ve been a big fan of the vintage for a long time. I’ve consumed 56 bottles over the years, with standouts from:

de Montille
Dujac
Ponsot
Comte Liger-Belair
DRC

I’m still buying at auction, but prices have escalated, especially for Dujac. There’s not a lot of bargains anymore.

Cathiard Malconsorts needs a lot of time - I recently had a 1989 made by the grandfather André (still fine) and a 2002 made by the father Sylvain - outstanding but still youthful.
So I guess all vintages are barely mature but the 2014 might be the most accessable.

I was under the impression that 07s could be fading or having an otherwise shorter-than-expected drinking window from here

Not in my experience. The 07s I have had in the last few years have been phenomenal, and I’m buying up wines from the vintage as much as possible; recently bought a bunch of Rousseau Chambertin, Beze, CSJ and Ruchottes. Chevillon, MG and Angerville are also great with no signs of fading. I think the wines will go at least 10 more years drinking well like the 01s.

07 Angerville are great.

I certainly wouldn’t be buying 07s for keeping but they give a lot of pleasure now.

Yeah probably drink them up in the next 5-8 years. I have lots of 99, 02, 05, 09, 10, 15, 16, 17 and 19 for the long term.

Agree, many of the best 2007s (red) are wonderful now - and while I wouldn’t store them for 15 to 20 more years I’m sure the best will still be fine for 8, 10, 12+ years -
not necessarily a mean Village, but a Vaucrains, Malconsorts, Clos Vougeot, Cazetiers … Clos de la Roche …

I had the 07 Clos de Tart a couple of years ago and it was smashing. And it didn’t seem to be teetering on the edge of senility either

Nice, I had it and the 07 vogue musigny a few years back in 21 and both seemingly needed more time, glad they got in the zone.

I have yet to have a Vogue Musigny that DIDN’T need more time

Recent '07s have surprised me on the upside - I had generally thought of them as “early drinking”, but turns out if you have good fruit and good balance you can just sit there and just keep developing!
