Traveling to PDX in the not too distant future. What are some can’t-miss places for food in the city? It’s been a very long time since I’ve been.
Nate, I think there was a thread a few months back on this…if you can’t find it PM me and I can give suggestions.
Kann is the place to go these days it seems but I haven’t had the chance to go myself. Phuket also has a lot of hype right now.
Some of my favorites:
Coquine
Canard
Le Pigeon
Eem
Republica (and it’s sister restaurants)
Ringside Steakhouse
Davenport
We also have really good pizza if that’s your kind of thing.
I just got back. My favorites were Coquine and Republica followed by Le Pigeon. Antica and Arden were also very good but nothing special.
What do you recommend for pizza? I get over to Portland fairly often and usually go for Korean/Thai/Middle Eastern because I don’t know of any great pizza. Thanks!
The ones I go to:
Apizza Scholls
Pizza Thief
Cafe Olli
Lovely’s Fifty Fifty
I think people like Gracie’s Apizza but I’ve only been once when it just opened
Apizza Scholls
Ken’s Artisan Pizza
Pizzeria Otto
Was just in Portland a couple weeks ago for the first time. Really enjoyed Pizza Thief and Lovely’s Fifty Fifty although the latter is a little overhyped IMO. Canard and Le Pigeon we did as a bang bang with cocktails and some bites at Canard before going to Le Pigeon after and were the highlights of our trip. Ask to sit at the chefs counter at Le Pigeon to get the full experience. Hit up Scotch Lodge after dinner as it was only 2 blocks away which was good fun. Eem was 100% worth the wait and hype. Met up with some friends and were able to order the whole menu, which is brief, but everything is on point. Fantastic and fun cocktails there too. Did an impromptu dinner at Toki after Coquine had to cancel everyone’s reservations the weekend we were there. Food was good but wouldn’t go out of my way to go back. Lunch at Ripe Cooperative after a hike in the Columbia River Gorge was really good. I love Naomi Pomeroy’s style of cooking.
On another note where are you staying? Being from LA with a significant homeless population I was shocked and appalled at how bad a huge swath of Portland is. It felt like Dawn of the Dead with heroin addled zombies everywhere you turned. Even the Pearl District was bad. The only centrally located area we would consider staying if we go back would be Northwest but I’m sure the other guys on this board who live there have better input. The level of drug use and mental health problems on the streets and the unsanitary conditions they created were enough to put a damper on the trip. I have stories of the unsavory things we saw that are unfit for publishing on this board and I’ll leave it at that…
Another good pizza spot is Pizza Kat on W. Burnside near the soccer stadium.
I’d also recommend Gallo Nero for good, casual Italian and a nice wine list. If you want fancier Italian, Mucca is a great spot downtown.
Ken’s and Scotties are our favorites for pizza. Republica and the affiliated restaurants are all good. Los Panchos is 4 tacos and duck fat fries for cheap right now.
Sad to see this. Posted in the event Aviary was on your list →

Yep, these are the top of my list - Chef Millard and Ksandek at Coquine are the best!
Will be in Portland for one day in a couple weeks. Fly in on Sunday mid-morning and leave on early Monday morning.
Any updated recommendations? Will be solo.
Another vote for Canard.
They take Inkind so you can get $100 off $300 using the current promo… inKind Pass. My experience though is that Inkind is not applicable to tips…
I enjoyed Le Pigeon, Apizza Scholls, Nimblefish, Shalom Y’All, Eem.
Only go to Nimblefish if you want to sit down anywhere from 30-90 minutes after your reso time.
For a quick day in Portland:
Canard, St Jack, or OK Omens would be perfect.
When I say it’s casual, I mean super casual, but I really love Flying Fish and their corkage is $10 or $15. A lot of stores are closed on Sunday, but Flor should be open and they have an excellent selection across the board (and are owned/run by the Canard/Le Pigeon team).
If you want a good retail/wine bar, Ora et Labora will be open and they have a really cool selection and an overall rear vibe.
We had a great lunch at Mothers Bistro and Bar - really tasty. It came recommended by a local.
Casual dinner at MEC - get the pork chop. Small but excellent wine list with Mediterranean offerings - we had the Chateau Musar and a Carricante from Mt Etna
Another vote for Coquine.
It’s been a few years but I’ve had some memorable meals at Jacqueline. Must start with oysters and then get the family style chefs choice.
Yeah, I love Coquine as well, but they are not open on Sundays.
I had a great meal at Davenport during my recent visit, but they are not open on Sundays either.
