Poll: What is your favorite Red Burgundy Vintage 2000->2009

Yeah…Peter…the wines are all great in every vintage: it’s the taster’s that make them otherwise.

I think you are misunderstanding the point. Every vintage has something to offer, not that they are all equally great.

Fundamentally, all vintages are good if one knows when to open the bottles.

Berry, I don’t think I’m “misunderstanding” anything. I am making light of Tom Blach’s statement, quoited above. It is particularly amusing, to me anyway, in light of Tom’s stalwart defense of 2004.

I’d really like to know the rationale of the 55% of people who didn’t vote for 2005: is it because this vintage isn’t approachable yet? or because people haven’t popped any corks or have low exposure to that vintage in particular? Apart from vintages with really strong characteristics like 2003 (that usually don’t appeal so much to burg lovers), I can’t think of anything that a vintage has to offer and that 2005 doesn’t do better.

Top to bottom I think 2005 is a great vintage but I think 2008 at its best pulls off the “power without weight” dynamic better. Its a more erthereal vintage but not nearly as consistent as 2005. 2008 is also the most floral vintage ive enountered. Overall I wouldn’t say 2008 is a “better” vintage but its the vintage Ive gotten the most pleasure from at this stage in its evolution.

Burgundy is fascinating for many reasons, guess this thead, demonstrates one of them.

Wow…I love the discussions.

Again, the topic is “your favorite”…not zee best vintage, whatever that might mean.

I have my favorite from my impressions tasting them as vintages in Burgundy when they were in barrel and bottle. Though I am really impressed with 2005 and “voted” for it, in some ways 2002 is my “favorite” vintage of all time (with 1990) , as I was and am really charmed by 2002. But, favorite is just that: a preference. So, no answer is wrong here…even those who voted for 2004. [soap.gif]

2002 is my favorite for its sappiness of fruit with good length and beginning complexity.

For Village and lower level wines, 2009 really delivers in terms of sheer deliciousness and quality of fruit. Yes they are really fruity but they have the backbone to stand up to the fruit without being too extracted or tannic.

2004 with 2 votes? Seriously?

White or red? Has someone already asked that question?

All of them. I picked up a case of Barthod’s AC Burgundy 2003 a few weeks ago and it opened my eyes to the strengths of some vintages. I opened a 2004 Ponsot Chambolle that was singing for the first hour and then dried out and fell apart showing weaknesses of other vintages. I have had good and bad from every vintage.

I like 2005 & 2001 in reds (except Volnay), neither especially for white. I like 2008 in both colors. I prefer whites from 2007 but just had a fantastic Savigny a few nights ago (Camus Bruchon Gravains) that only had slightly edgy tannins as a drawback. Generally 2004 is good in both colors, I haven’t run across the “meanie greenies” but I also haven’t stated opening bottles until this year.

I like burgundies because growers allow vintage variation to show.

No.
Everyone else read the thread title.

In my case other vintages are much more likely to drink well both now and in my lifetime. 20-30 years from now is another story.

Hmm, well played.

I guess I have been too into whites lately. My subconscious got the better of me.

First time I’ve logged on here in ages. Am simply not prepared to vote on this thread as imho simply way too soon for me personally to vote, nor do I believe I’ve sampled enough wines at all levels to provide an informed opinion - good grief am still in recent times drinking 97’s & 98’s ! Went to a tasting a few weeks ago with several stonking 30 yr old ish red burgs (Rousseau, D’Angerville et al) which has since had my mind totally recalibrating red burgundy, how long to keep, when is optimum drinking etc etc

With respect to Berry though I do agree with the content of all his posts re 2008 which, for me, is irrestible drinking currently on those wines I’ve tried, both red and white - pure delights. I know of, and understand, Thom’s keenness on the 2001’s and am v happy to have those I have in my cellar with no rush to open too soon.

I’m gobsmacked at opinion on the 2005’s to be honest, not because I don’t think its a probable great vintage (I do probably / for sure) but because I’m amazed folk can have such an informed vote as ‘favourite’ - good heavens, for me, even the 2005 Bourgogne Rouges are, in many cases, shut down hard or just starting to ease up. Flame me if you like but do I infer some folk are reflecting what they ‘think’ they should vote for or what is ‘best’ ? If those 2005 voters are doing so because they are drinking / have drunk the wines then I’m completely ‘lost’ for words !

2009 ? Who knows ? Way too soon again to say but to be even more ‘mischievous’, sorry (!), will going forward, be it that 2010 is the ‘love of our lives’ - with several burgundian vigneron friends and the ‘experts’ / journos suggesting it is 2008++ ?

All part of the magic that is…

Why not , Greg? favourite is entirely a different thing to best. To me favourite means the one I choose when reaching for a bottle now. I guess that 05 will be the best but guess is all we can do.

Stuart, I stole this apercu from a conversation I had with Jasper Morris. I rather liked it.

2007 1% 2008 10% 2009 No votes

Res ipsa loquitor.

Sorry I helped to gobsmack you. I will attempt to honestly (no flaming) answer your question, regarding the '05, which I voted for. I am relatively new to collecting Burgundy (2 years) and have tasted no such wines older than 10 years of age. So while I cannot speak about what something will be like when it is thirty, I know what I like in younger wines. (I pop many of these wines to taste as widely as I can.) I have drunk any number of wines from '05 in the last eighteen months, from the generic to the premier cru level. I did much (by no means all) of this before I “learned” last spring that these should not be touched because they were “shut down” or “inaccessible;” otherwise I would just be “wasting” them. I enjoyed most if not all of them thoroughly; they were quite open, though they were still extremely young, compared to many '02s and the single '01 I tried that seemed to be moving into the second stage of life. I have not tasted nearly as widely as many on this board, but I have done enough to have an idea of what I do and don’t like. Across level and producer, the '05’s are my overall favorite, though as I posted earlier, I found something to like in all the vintages from '02 to '09 except '03 and '04.

It is all part of the magic. Cheers! [cheers.gif]

Stuart voted twice - he couldn’t help himself!

I can’t wait to taste some 09 Fourrier. London shipment, where art thou!?

I hear they are great. I havn’t bought any yet though. I had an option to get some from the UK but passed. Not very smart of me as 2009 Fourrier prices are silly here.
