I’ll be the only wine drinker so it won’t be THAT bottle. A friend suggested opening a bottle purchased some time ago that is a style that I no longer appreciate - sadly, I have plenty of those!
Thank you John, that was a lovely interview with John Brecher and Dorothy Gaiter. I thoroughly agree with their sentiment that wine is meant for sharing.
In this turbulent winter of our discontent, one line in particular resonates:
The pandemic reminded us none of us is promised tomorrow.
I read them as I took first baby steps in the world of wine. Instead of gatekeepers, they hold open the door.
Here is a link to their collected columns about Open That Bottle Night
I think to open A Bottle from Ganevat, a very talented Producer in jura
I love his wines
In theory, there is a bottle of Ch Palmer XIX blend L20.07 in the home cellar. If I can find it, I’ll be opening it the day after for my wife’s birthday celebration.
Update: can’t find the Palmer, must be offsite somewhere. Oh well. Instead, 1982 Lafite.
Sorry that you have to settle
lol. It’s not a trivial decision: I have only a handful of 1982 Bdx left and I ain’t restocking.
If you don’t drink them you effectively have none.
Opened this for my dad last night since he’s in town for a couple of days. He’s always liked Silver Oak and Opus but Regusci got him into wine. I found a couple of these on winebid and this bottle was fantastic. Beautiful black cherry, cassis, leather, tobacco, silky and a surprising amount of freshness on the finish.
This was not our original plan, but as John Lennon once sang, life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.
That said it was downright amazing. The best bottle of Ultramarine we have ever had. It had an incomplete disgorgement with lots of yeast stuff in the final glass, and maybe that caused even more interesting development, but wow. Just wow!
Brut Nature January in this house. That’s dry right?
Dry enough for me! Too dry in fact.
I did Dry Riesling-uary.
I’m cooking “That Steak” tonight but my wine is that wine I opened last night.
14oz Morgan Ranch Ribeye, 20oz 30 Day Flannery Ribeye and 12oz 60 Day Flannery Ribeye (that steak)
Jim’s notes on this 2022 include this: “[t]he 2022 vintage’s surprising brightness and high-toned nature meshes nicely with this wine’s inherent nature to be lushly fruited, silky in texture and delicious from the get go.” I’ve had a number of the PGC 2022s and this is the second bottle of the 2022 Volcanic I’ve enjoyed. Both bottles have been just as described. More so, in fact, than any of the other various PGC 2022s I’ve opened over the past year. There’s a very generous nose with this wine, also.
Ran out of eggs?
Had to go for something special for such a special night (lol)
This is absolutely monumental. This takes Tondonia Reserva and adds another gear. Ill probably make a separate note/post on this, but this is probably the greatest wine i’ve ever had. Wow
Does this afternoon count?
It as paella day at my wine storage facility, so I opened an 85 Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Gran Riserva.
Heck no, have 3 doz in the fridge, plus the neighbors chickens are starting to produce again.
Eggs = Breakfast protein
Steak = Dinner protein
