Official Dryuary (Dry January) 2026 Thread

I love beer and sushi

Outside of very spicy foods, I’d agree. While champagne is pretty fantastic with sushi, I don’t feel like I need it

Even after meeting Kikuhime BY? I am crushed…

I suppose this response was inevitable. But the statute of limitations should surely be near on this bit of absurdity.

So sorry to bother you with stale absurdity in the Dry January thread.

I will go work on some new material.

ok, so now that I’m into this a bit, I gotta admit - this seems a little silly, and honestly - completely unnecessary.

The Ghia?

I do love that there are Dryuary purists who will not suffer the NA alternatives.

Reminds me of the natural wine stuff.

The concept in general, the product is fine

(edit) to elaborate just a bit, I guess I thought having a “drink” would be a thing, and I’d want these as some sort of surrogate - I don’t.

No wine, no problem.

Today was the 6th anniversary of the announcement of Rush drummer Neil Peart. He had passed on the 7th, but the family waited until after the funeral to tell the public. Neil had an overwhelming desire for privacy; the lyrics to “Limelight” were autobiographical.

Instead of posting the official video, recorded at Le Studio in Quebec, here’s Philo Tsoungui of The Mars Volta attempting to learn the tune for the first time. It’s a cool segment from Drumeo, a large online platform for all things drums – lessons, videos, play-along songs, etc.

As a lifelong keyboard player, I mostly make drummer jokes, so my favorite part of Drumeo’s is their “For the First Time” series. Other excellent videos are of Kenny Aronoff attempting “Changes” by Yes – Kenny charts his parts – and Todd Sucherman learning “Rope” by Foo Fighters. Crazy!

Stay dry, folks.

We drink more champagne with sushi than any other beverage. Our BYO sushi scene in the area is top notch. We are regulars at one place and they were surprised to see us without a bottle. They usually bring us sake in these cases. We had to explain that the omission was intentional.

The meal was still very good, but it definitely felt like something was missing.

Have one, it doesn’t mean you have to go on a binge and it will do no harm whatever.

Tom, sit this one out.

Your post is incredibly tone deaf. It’s a thread about Dry January. An event that you’re not participating in and yet here you are. People are trying to achieve something. Encouraging them to not hit their goal isn’t helpful. You’ve already received pushback from another poster on this thread. It’s wild how you can’t/won’t/don’t see the arrogance in your response.

My wife and I are doing dryuary for the first time. The hardest part so far has been certain meals that we always pair with wine. We decided to have soup for dinner tonight to help minimize the temptation.

100% feel you here. Wine and food go hand in hand at our house. That’s why I find it easier to combine Dry January with a diet/cut. When the food is more boring I don’t feel the same desire to pair it with wine.

The ‘reflex’ wine sipping was the hardest habit to interrupt the first time we did dry January. Actually, it was the only part that I consciously had to pay attention to.

At this point, if the Bears and Rams can’t make me break, nothing will!

Thanks to you all for being such good company.

Well he decided to have some wine anyways so it was a moot point.

“I sit at my hotel at night, I think of something that’s funny, then I go get a pen and I write it down. Or if the pen is too far away, I have to convince myself that what I thought of ain’t funny.” - Mitch Hedberg

I had a similar experience last night. It was 11:55pm and I was nice and toasty in bed. Then I realized I hadn’t posted anything on this thread, and had to decide if it worth getting out of bed and being cold again. It was not.

No wine, no problem.

I saw the sushi convo upthread. I don’t usually have wine with sushi, but a couple years ago I wanted to try pairing sushi with a red wine. I chose a Zweigelt from @Adam_Frisch, serving it chilled to about 50 degrees. What a terrific pairing!

Below is “Rope,” by Foo Fighters. Berserker Rush fans: imagine blending Presto and Counterparts through the lens of the Foos, especially “Show Don’t Tell.” And the cymbal ride pattern in the chorus is straight out of “The Spirit of Radio!” Taylor Hawkins (RIP) was quoted as saying: “I owe Neil Peart a lot of money for the chorus of Rope. I’m splitting my royalties on that song with Neil Peart.”

Stay dry, folks.

I got this email today from Open Table. The nearest participating location is Chicago (~3hrs away), but nice effort.
