Just picked up a couple bottles of 2006 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame at the Woodinville, WA Costco for $100 and some Veuve Clicquot yellow label for $41.
I actually prefer the Kirkland label at half the price to Yellow Label V-C. I tasted them blind in a group and the Kirkland was preferred by the majority; 7/2
Less than half the price too! However it lacks in the perception and therefore the preference of many of my guests.
If they have the rose Domain Carneros, it’s in stock here in Hawaii now, you should try that at $30. Red fruits on the nose and palate, a little biscuity, nice balance
Cracked the Latour Volnay I picked up yesterday,'09
Closed on the open, gave it an hour and not much more, nursed it through the night, never really woke up. In a quiet period I guess…had plenty of material in the palate but not sure I’ll buy more. Seemed darker fruited and more masculine than I prefer in a Volnay,
Not sure how the law applies in your jurisdiction, but in California one can shop at Costco for liquor/wine as well as pharmacy without having to be a member. They certainly don’t advertise it but I think its some artifact of the state law. Although a Costco member, one time I’d forgotten my card, and was only going to pick up wine, and tested it out. Just tell the bouncer at the front that one is going for booze only.
It does feel sort of strange, wandering around Costco without a membership card. Sort of like crashing a wedding reception.
Not sure about CA, but in Delaware you can shop in the Costco liquor store as it is the law.
You don’t need to have a membership card.
All these states liquor laws are so odd.
This sounds like a great value but I looked up this wine on CT and found a grand total of 2 tasting notes on it since 1999 and no mention on the three wine critic sites to which I have access. (sometimes putting the preposition in the correct place sounds so weird.) Does anyone have any impressions of this cuveé?
Smaller producer with 19 hectares of vineyards. They have received several “coup de coeur” in the Guide Hachette (French) which and the comments on the French bulletin boards are positive.
The Costco location closest to me (in Seattle, on 4th) rarely seems to have any big surprises (i.e. - no Musar). While I was in there today, stopped by the wine racks, and bit on a few random purchases. How’d I do?
2014 Mongeard-Mugneret SlB 1er Narbantons @ $40 per
2012 Chateau Cantermerle @ $30 per
2010 CUNE Gran Reserva @ $20 per
Burbank Costco has 2003 Tokaj Classic Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos @ $52 and 2011 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino @39.99, some nice picks for the holidays.
The latter two large production Spanish wines could do double duty with casual consumers, as well as with cognoscenti, although I suppose the young Muga may be showing some oak.
Went to Costco tonight and found 2 interesting chilean reds, 2010 Santa rita casa reale cab sav and 2013 purple angel by Montes carmenere/petit verdot. Both cost right around $60. What is everyone’s thoughts on these???
