“Ripe fruit…”
I would grab cases of Malescot, Dissan and Giscours. Too bad my costco does not have them, right now only D’Issan is on sale for 45.97 , you are really luchy!
Ughh. The Bonanza description reads almost exactly like the Caymus California Cab . . . . I guess Bonanza is the NV version of it. Credit due to the Wagners I guess for having some boundary to how far they’re willing to dilute their flagship brand.
That’s a classic Costco move, putting a shelf talker with the points for an adjacent higher-rated vintage of the wine, as well as shopping for high scores between the different writers.
I’m not saying 21 Clos du Marquis is a bad wine or a bad buy – I’ve never had it. But it’s just a classic deceptive-but-not-literally-lying move that Costco frequently uses.
Yeah man. There’s no way the '01 got scores like that. But at $35 I’ll take whatever they have.
It appears (from retail and auction sites, I don’t have any critic subscriptions) that the 2021 Clos du Marquis got a WA 93 and a Vinuous 91.
They should have just put that on the shelf talker instead of the selected high scores of the 2020, it’s not like those scores are really low for a $35 Bordeaux.
I literally watched them changing the tag into a .97 one. The wine guy look at me and was like, what are you waiting for? So I have to jump in, for two.
I think March/April is the time they clearing 2021 and make room for 2022 to come. 2022 is exceptional year for Bordeaux, I am ok for a price jump, but finger crossed they are not affected by the 20% tariff .
The Northland Kansas City Costco has '20 LLC for $199.97 and '20 Troplong Mondot for $99.97.
Superior, CO Costco has a lot of 2021 BdX. Otherwise nothing too exciting. I did snag a 2020 LLC that was $149 (3 left for others!). Seems like they are trying to move the '21’s though to make room for 2022 hopefully.
Costco is upstanding when it comes to scores and wines with the correct vintage. I have never seen any intentional misrepresentation from them in 20+ years ITB. When there are mistakes they are quick to correct and it is usually the wholesaler/supplier who shipped the 2021 without telling them the 2020 was depleted.
I’ve seen a lot of times when their shelf talker listed higher scores from adjacent vintages and not the lower ones for the vintage for sale. But I feel like I saw that more 10+ years ago than recently.
Could depend on the store, I think that stuff is handled store by store.
The only times I feel like I’ve seen that is when they post the most recent vintage score because the current release score isn’t out yet. I don’t feel like I’ve seen wines misrepresented in any dishonest way. They are pretty consistent with the practice.
Well, there is the photo 10 posts earlier in the thread that you saw. There are all the scores out for the 2021 Clos du Marquis. Lower than the 2020 scores they posted.
Coincidental? Who knows.
Anyway, you’ve seen what you’ve seen and so have I. Nothing really for us to get crossways over. As always, smart for a consumer to pay attention.
Sorry, I didn’t catch your first post. It’s certainly possible they opt for the recent vintage number when it’s much better. I feel like they add a number when it first hits the system, whatever the practice, and then ride with it regardless of what scores come out after. I’m probably 50/50 on finding a correct score on these when I look them up.
Rich,
Nice find. My Costco is still at $320 but I will start watching this as Texas is usually later than other large markets like CA/WA/AZ.
I believe Costco was some years ago the largest single buyer of Bordeaux. More than some of the monopolies. Not sure if it still is true, but they are certainly large enough to put together some interesting deals.
My guess is that they took a large amount of 2021 to get below opening prices for 2022 and perhaps 2023. With that kind of clout, and so much unsold inventory would give them a lot of leverage.
I expect when the 2022s arrive and tariff free or at 10%, there will be some sweet deals.
The super-blowout price has reached Vallejo, CA. That’s #132 for @Arv_R
Ok, serious question. Is this worth it? I’m not a Bordeaux guy, never had Palmer, know of it, it’s been staring me in the face at my local Costco (St Charles, IL) for $199 for the past couple months. I’m not afraid of the price tag, but $200 is a special occasion wine for us. Is Palmer that special and is 2020 a great vintage? How long until it’s in the zone? I also know worth is in the eye of the beholder…
Thoughts? Would others buy it at this price?
