My local Costco now has stacked cases of the 2016 Kirkland Barolo. Interestingly, they are tagged as “Kirkland 2016 Barolo (II)”, so presumably it’s a second lot.
They rearranged the wine section some months back. Seems like they split up the really expensive stuff into two small areas, eliminated many of the mid-tier European offerings to focus on domestic cab, and the oceans of cheap wine keeps rising. Not the best change, IMHO.
I have shopped at Total Wine. I go in for something I want. It’s a massive center. Their business plan is obvious. You ask for where your selection might be. They steer you to their “winery direct” or distillery direct products. I have found some of them to be decent. Most leave me disappointed at the price point. They aren’t passing on “savings”. They pocket the difference.
Costo stores wine as does Total wine. Generally at room temperature. Generally upright in cases. Costco DOES store display wines on their sides. This keeps that cork moist.
I don’t often buy wine at Costco nowadays. They peddle those California wines that ALL taste like additives. Mega purple and more. Like soda pop. What is my strategy at Costco? International wines. French, Italian, Argentina, Chile.
Costco can often have deep discounts end of season. It’s getting to be harvest season. Gotta move old stuff.
Chapoutier makes good Chateauneuf du Pape. They have one discounted from $49.99 to $29.99. Heckuva deal.
2016 Kirkland Brunello di Montalcino $19.99 at Maplewood MN location. JS 92.
Label indicates Gianni Maccari (Ridolfi).
Manager said they only received a few cases.
I bought two bottles from the same location this evening and helped a couple find the nearly empty bin.
If by chance you asked somebody where he found the bottle in his hand and then cleared out the bin alongside him, congrats on proving the world is even smaller than you thought.
The one by us is out of their Kirkland brand of sparkling, Veuve, Dom many sparkling wines in general. We’re lucky to have an extra case of Veuve and a few bottles of Dom. Yesterday we sold a fantastic vintage of Opus One under the going price online even.
Temporarily living in the Boston area and am happy to report that the Waltham Costco has a much better selection of wine (and beer) than my home store in Tampa. It’s like night and day, really.
Just took a short 36 hour vacation in Boston and stopped by Bauer Wine & Spirits and it was a solid shop. I popped in many local little shops while walking around the Freedom Trail and sadly saw a lot of Whispering Angel prominently displayed in front.
Agree! I have not been a fan of prior vintages of this wine, but saw it at my local store and bought one bottle to try. I had been pleasantly surprised by the 2016 Kirkland barolo so I figured this was worth a $20 flyer. Popped and poured and enjoyed with a weeknight meal. Another winner, considering the price and approachability in its youth.
