Official Costco Thread

Day 1 - I’d say this is a good, but not great cab, and a solid value at $23. Nice, fairly restrained black cherry fruit, decent acidity, and a bit of oak, but it’s not overpowering (always my biggest concern with these value priced cabs). It’s fairly hollow on the mid-palate though and not overly complex. Prob better in 6 months to a year. I’d put this squarely behind the 16 but ahead of the 17. Not sure if I’ll buy more - will see how its drinking tomorrow/day 2.

Visited the Santa Rosa,CA Costco today. Way better selection of wines than I’ve seen at my local Costco in Texas. I also saw plenty of the 19 Kirkland SLD. I did grab an Icewine. Hopefully it’s good! Attaching photos of everything else! I wouldn’t mind that 3L, seems a pretty decent deal.

The SA Prum is nothing like the JJ Prum. Stay away!

I was tempted, I’ve been enjoying more Riesling and JJ Prum is a new favorite. Sounds like I didn’t miss out then!

Also some Tokaji pt6 there but I saw it under the shelves as I was leaving.

I did a flyby at #471 today and some long lingering items have been reduced

At least 4 months on the shelves…

2017 Produttori di Barbaresco normale $36
2018 San Giusto Rentennano CC $30
2016 Guigal rouge [St Joseph] price chopped to $20
2015 La Lagune [Haut Medoc] price chopped to $40
2017 Tardieu Laurent [CNDP] $29
2018 La Cour d’Argent [Bordeaux Superieur] price chopped to $9

Newer items included

2015 Cucco ‘Cerrati’ [Barolo] $30
2018 Familles Chaussy [CNDP] $25 in Mas de Boislauzon boxes
2018 Puech Haut Saint Drezery [Languedoc] $14
2017 Hirsch ‘Raschen Ridge’ PN [Sonoma Coast] $65
NV Taittinger Brut Francaise [Champagne] $40
2019 Precision CS [Napa] $13 never heard of this?
2016 Chapoutier ‘Chante Alouette’ Blanc [Hermitage] $90 quite an esoteric item for #471
2018 Mondavi ‘Maestro’ [Napa] $20

Some of y’all are lucky. Went to my local Costco in the Cleveland suburbs with a member to scope out the wine department, and it was basically the same as any generic grocery store selection and no breaks on the prices either. Only Kirkland wines were a California CS and Sonoma Chardonnay. Guess I’ll just stay a member of BJs, since it’s right down the street.

Its totally hit/miss based on location. We discussed this more in detail earlier on in the thread, but the areas that tend to be more ‘affluent’ seem to get the better wines.

I think it’s a more of a regional issue. I believe that the country is divided up into regions that have different wine buyers/distribution (there was a map posted upthread). I have been to many Costco stores in both northeast and southeast regions, including affluent areas, and the selection does not come close to what I have seen people post here in places like Texas, AZ, California and Seattle.

  • Depending on your state, membership may not be required for shopping for alcohol/pharmacy. Also if you buy Costco gift cards, those can be used without membership (just show it to get access to the warehouse) Those also work at the gas pumps.
  • At the moment there are an unusually lush range of promotions for new memberships - between GooglePay, Dosh, various credit cards offers, Citigold, and so on. Additionally, one can get a refund on either level of membership if they feel they didn’t get their moneys worth, not just pro rated, on the whole cost. So its risk free to try.
  • Wine selection can be variable from warehouse to warehouse, which is one reason why this thread exists, and gets lots of traffic.

I see most of those in our area but La Lagune for $40 damn.

2017 Clos Apalta for $99 today.

Frisco Tx: been looking for more of the geyserville 18s. Loaded up.
Also had 19’ three valleys $19.99
Dom P 2010. $159.99

Greg, I think you grossly underscored this wine. I gave it a 90. [berserker.gif] Looks like the Richmond, CA warehouse got restocked and my wife picked up 6 of these. In a couple of years they will be absolutely great Tuesday night don’t think too hard what goes with the pasta or beans wines.

Dallas store today.

This summer has been a little slow at my Costco, but recently it’s been picking up. Tons of interesting stuff cycling through.
I love Willamette Pinots so I was psyched to see the Lingua Franca today.

2017 Lingua Franca Estate $35.99
2018 Esmonin Cote de Nuits - Villages $25.99
2017 Guy Amiot Chassagne-Montrachet $29.99 (on sale - has been here for a while at $37)
