More About Us

Best Meet-Cute Story Ever

I was an architect and my son called into a radio program to find me a wife. And then like 90 minutes later my son and I were at the Empire State Building and he forgot his backpack — no wait…

Anyway… Emily and I actually met by chance at a bar in Seattle. We were both supposed to be on dates with other people! My date hadn’t arrived, so I saved a seat at the bar. Time kept passing and the bartender was all “You gotta give up that seat, buddy,” and I was all “Bro, it’s for my date!” And then Emily walked up. She was early for her date. She asked for the seat.. and now we are sitting next to each other for the rest of our lives.

We literally fell in love over wine (…and each other), and decided to bet everything on making the kind of wines we couldn’t stop talking about.

Fortuity Cellars was born from equal parts passion and persistence —Historic Yakima Valley vineyards and a belief that great wine should reflect place before ego. We make small lots, obsess over the details, and chase balance, texture, and longevity over flash—wines that demonstrate what’s possible with world-class vineyards and relentless intention.

Our winemaking philosophy

Our winemaking is grounded in respect for the vineyard and a deep appreciation for the Yakima Valley’s diverse growing conditions. We take a thoughtful, vineyard-driven approach—highlighting varietal character and vintage expression through minimal intervention in the cellar. Our wines are fresh, balanced, and expressive, with a focus on structure, texture, and elegance. To achieve our quality and style goals we source from some of the best, most highly-acclaimed vineyards in the state of Washington.

One of the things we love most about the wine industry is small businesses supporting each other. All of our vineyard sites are family-owned and operated. When we select vineyard sites, we’re not only evaluating elevation, soils, and micro climates but the pioneering families that own and manage them. It’s with that partnership that truly beautiful wines are created. We are honored that these world class families have entrusted their vines to us.

Where does the name come from?

Fortuity is those rare times when you’re presented an opportunity, take it and your life changes in new and profound ways. It’s an ode to how we met and how we started our winery.. but we believe everyone has their own chance moments worth celebrating. We hope you take a chance on us and find something new and amazing today.

**Fortuity Cellars – Reviewed by @Marshall_Manning **

For those who aren’t familiar with my palate, I generally prefer more old world style wines that show fruit purity, acid, terroir, texture, complexity and structure without much noticeable oak or wood. I am especially sensitive to toasty, creamy, chocolate or whiskey notes and I often pick up alcohol more than most tasters. So please keep that under consideration when reading my comments. Most tasters are more oak and alcohol tolerant than I am.

All wines were tasted in Grassl 1855 glasses and were tried with appropriate food as well as on their own and were tasted over a few hours. My wife, who is much more artistically inclined, really liked the labels and thought they were attractive and yet understated and unique.

2022 Merlot, Red Heaven Vineyard, Yakima Valley, $45 list – A nice, deep magenta color, not too inky. A very nice nose of blueberry and plum, some baking cocoa (as opposed to a really creamy chocolate), with some noticeable oak but it’s not overpowering. As it opens up the fruit notes become really pretty and more expansive. On the palate, there’s the plum and blueberry fruit, turning to a brighter cherry with airing. Along with the pretty fruit there’s spice, some baking chocolate, and balanced oak. It’s properly fruity as opposed to jammy, and it’s one of those wines that shows the quality of Merlot without the heavy-handed oak treatment that many of them have. There’s a nice plush texture, but with fine tannins and balancing acid. Even though the oak is there, it never overwhelms the fruit, and it has a nice, spicy finish that doesn’t feel flat. It’s listed at 14.5%, but doesn’t finish hot. This is a delicious Merlot and worked especially well with a pan-seared hangar steak. I don’t often love Merlot because of the way it’s treated in the cellar, but this shows the positive qualities of the grape without being too much and I imagine most Berserkers would find this an excellent bottle of wine. This should improve for at least 5-6 years if not longer.

2023 Grenache, Elephant Mountain Vineyard, Yakima Valley, $45 list – Clear, vibrant ruby color. I always enjoy red wines that you can see through instead of big, inky monsters. A really pretty nose of raspberry, kirsch, spice, black pepper and floral notes. It has a light confectionary note without smelling like bubble gum. In the mouth there’s rich, juicy, raspberry fruit, spice, black pepper and a hint of mint or menthol. There’s a nice, rich texture, supple on the palate, with fine tannins and enough acid. The wine matched up very well with some Olympia Provisions sausages, although without food there was a bit of warmth on the finish. I find that true of most Grenache, though this was more balanced than many. I also found this very enjoyable and think it’s probably best as an early drinker over the next 2-4 years.

2022 Syrah Cuvee, Yakima Valley, $45 list – Typical purple Syrah color, but you can still see through it. Really juicy, pure boysenberry and raspberry fruit aromas, with some black pepper and spice as well as a light creamy oak note. I was hoping for more olive, meat or smoke aromas, but I think those might have been obscured a bit by the oak. Syrah is one of those grapes (Nebbiolo is another) that I think should never see any oak that leaves an imprint. And even though the winery notes say it’s all in “neutral” oak, if you can smell it or taste it then the oak wasn’t neutral. On the palate there’s very nice boysenberry and raspberry fruit, black pepper, spice and a hint of smoked meat. The oak is less noticeable on the palate, which is nice. As the wine opens up the fruit becomes a bit deeper and more spice comes out on the finish. It has a polished, plush texture but has vibrancy through the finish. There’s a bit of structure here, but this is probably best over the next 3-5 years.

2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, Destined Collection, Yakima Valley, $65 list – A blend of Red Willow and Heart of the Hill vineyards. Dark purple in the glass, looks more dense and extracted. An intense nose of blackberry and boysenberry fruit, lots of creamy, chocolate oak, with mint, anise and other spices. Big and rich on the palate, with jammy, very ripe fruit blackberry and boysenberry fruit that reminds me of many Napa wines, with creamy oak, chocolate, and light whiskey barrel notes. I wish there was less ripeness and less oak, as this seems unlike the style and balance of the other wines and there’s none of the prettier, elegant side of Cabernet Sauvignon left here. It’s nice with a grilled bavette steak, but on its own it comes across as a bit ponderous and it finishes pretty alcoholic and oaky. I wondered if there was a stylistic change here since this is a few vintages older than the other wines or if they were just trying to make a wine that tasted “expensive” as opposed to a wine that is balanced and interesting. This is the only wine that I didn’t enjoy and that I wouldn’t want to have again.

After I wrote that note, I reached out to Lee at Fortuity and asked him if there was an intentional change in style in newer vintages or if there was a reason the Cabernet seemed so different from the other wines. His response is below:

Yes, a couple things to highlight here.

First, the Cab is from the 2020 vintage which was the hottest year on record in Washington State (prior to 2021, which is now the hottest year on record here). So generally darker, riper fruit notes overall in those Washington vintages. The 2022 and 2023 vintages were much cooler in comparison. So generally brighter, lighter and more fruit forward vintages.

In addition, yes… we do design our barrel program based on the target wine. For example, our Syrah is 100% neutral French oak 225L barrels to let the fruit speak for itself. Our Grenache is 100% neutral French oak 500L puncheons. So even softer barrel influence. We’re focused on developing the brighter fruit and the plush rich textures.

For our Bordeaux wines, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are typically around 50% new French oak and 50% neutral French oak barrels. The intention and use of the new French oak on our Bordeaux varietals is to provide complexity, structure, and a richer and more refined tannin integration. For the Cab Sauv specifically, it receives more time in barrel, 29 months in barrel (our other reds are typically 20 months in barrel). So definitely more barrel impact due to new oak and extended aging. The later vintages of the Cab Sauv are more fruit forward, med-full body, plush tennis without a heavy coffee, toffee, toasted barrel note. Aiming for a bright, balanced, plush wine. 2022s and beyond benefit from the vintage as well as the refinement of our barrel program. i.e. Being very selective about which Bordeaux cooperages we work with as well the specific barrels we use for each varietal to drive more of the soft, warm red fruit notes.”

In conclusion, I really liked the Merlot a lot and also enjoyed the Syrah and Grenache. I think many Berserkers would also like these three wines. This vintage of the Cabernet is pretty big and bold but from Lee’s notes it sounds like they might be heading towards a more balanced style in future vintages. I think they deserve consideration for BerserkerDay.

And a few from @Kevin.Moses group:

Fortuity 2023 Grenache
Ruby to garnet color, medium intensity. Somewhat unusual Grenache nose, has typicity though, lifted. A little harsh on the back palate at first, some signs of VA. Dry, medium acidity, medium plus tannin, tea like, medium plus body, high alcohol. Good wine with some rough edges.

Fortuity 2022 Merlot
Medium intensity Ruby, clear. Black fruit on the nose, and a herbal streak. Black fruit and chocolate on the palate. Very structured as far as oak and the high tannins are concerned, medium minus acidity, streak of enjoyable bitterness on the finish, food wine. Good quality, medium length, full bodied yet a little thin on the finish. Youthful, needs some time to find balance.

Fortuity 2022 Syrah
Purple hue, medium intensity, clear. Not a lot of pepper on the nose, meaty and a little funky, expressive. Dark fruit on the palate. Dry, medium acidity, full bodied.

Fortuity 2020 Destined Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep ruby color, clear. Beautiful varietal nose, the right amount of pyrazines. Red and black fruit on the palate. Dry, medium plus acidity, making it fresh on the back palate. Medium plus tannins with nice grip. High alcohol, wears it well. Very good, clearly the standout of the four, youthful, will improve for 5-10 years.

Fortuity, Cab Sauv 2020

This is a dry, medium acid, high tannins wine with low heat. Medium body and a long finish, with moderate complexity.

On the palate, beautiful notes of blackberry, cherries, and prune. There’s an earthy component that includes pepper and pine. The strong presence of French oak is a plus. Overall, tannins are firm but not abrasive.

This is a wine with a beautiful nose resembling classic Oakville or Rutherford-style Cabernet Sauvignon, but with a structure that is much leaner and almost reminiscent of Italy’s Valpolicella style. An excellent wine for new lovers of Cabernet Sauvignon, who are not looking for the heavier style often associated with Cab Sauv.

Can be drank without food, but it would really love a steak. Shame it doesn’t seem that they’ll be continuing this multi-site blend

@ CGlescher Thank you! Glad you picked up The Showstoppers bundle. Awesome way to get a sense of our style across the portfolio. If you’re looking for one to open first, I would recommend The Fifty Fifty. It’s drinking beautifully right now and it’s one of our most popular wines. Enjoy!

@Alex.M Hello fellow Berserker Newbie! So thankful for the Berserker team for making a day like this possible and giving small producers like us some more visibility. Thank you for your purchase and support! So excited for you to try our wines!

I visited the winery this past October and loved the wines. I became a member that day. They are lovely wines and quite balanced with good aging potential

Hi there Stewart! So fun to see you on WB! Thanks for the kind words!

@Alex.M Hi there - we’ll start to ship out in the next couple weeks (weather pending), so when you open one up, be sure to let us know what you think!

Hey Berserkers! Where are you at in the world? Are you in the middle of an ice storm? Is it 15 degrees over there? Or are you on the beach someplace?

Hi Berserkers…Thought I’d jump in here and say a few things about the Cab Franc offer. First of all, we only have about 15 cases left of this, and that’s after releasing it in September to club. Second of all, this is a CLUB ONLY wine. So, you’re getting something very limited and SO GOOD! We won’t name any names…but another WA winery (very boutique) has received 100 points from Owen Bargreen on their Cab Franc from Red Willow, and our rows are right next to ours. We believe amazing wine starts in the vineyard! Oh…and for those who don’t like green/bell peppery Cab Francs, that is not what our Cab Franc is like. Think violet and red fruit. Here’s what we told our club about:

2023 Cabernet Franc | Red Willow Vineyard

The 2023 season was stellar—low yields, exceptional fruit. A cool spring delayed bud break, but a warm May pushed vines ahead. This wine was aged 20 months in 75% new French oak and then bottled in June 2025. Vibrant and plush, with cranberry, raspberry and red currant followed by violet, herbal tea and soft vanilla. Our Cab Franc debut (one of Emily’s favorites!) was too good to keep back. We recommend opening for the holidays and it can certainly cellar 10+ years. 91 cases produced. 14% ABV Club Exclusive.
