NYC restaurants that have some hidden gems in the wine lists. Do they still exist?

Even if the decor, atmosphere or food is lacking, but the wine cellar has some gems…
It would be an adventure to find these places… I’m thinking this knowledgeable crowd might know of some?
Merci!

hard to beat the bar at emp. lots of interesting bottles with age that have not been repriced post pandemic.

Is it a different list than the dining room one?

it’s an obvious pick but chambers has a ton of hidden gems. the wine list is so incredibly extensive, and beyond the A listers when you start digging there’s lots of great small producers, backvintage stuff, value buys, especially domestic

Chambers, Kabawa, EMP, Popina, Lei, Zimmi’s, Le Chene, Restaurant Daniel, Eli’s Table, Manhatta, Harry’s Steakhouse come to mind

Nice Matin on the UWS is a hidden gem for wine lovers. Food is only OK, but the list has a Grand Award with great breadth across most major regions and pretty reasonable pricing.

I think the wine internet killed the chances of something like the old Tomasso’s in Brooklyn where you could find nice older wines for under retail (or auction!). But would second Chambers as a fascinating and fun list.

That’s what I was afraid of. Thank you!

Didn’t know they had a great wine list. Will check it out. Thanks!

Noreetuh has always been good and reasonable, though not like these old time places, no doubt. is Marta still around–was quite good for bubbles. i used to drink Ulysse Collin there back in the day for just a little north of $100,.Does Paris still have such places; it did the last time i was there, but maybe it’s changed as well?

Saint Urban. New, but won’t stay below the radar for long, neither for wine nor food.

It’s the best list I’ve seen for mainstream wines. They also have no corkage Mondays. Too bad the food is not better but then it is in the UWS where most restaurants’ food is meh.

I just found this article which also answers my question:

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/dining/drinks/nyc-restaurant-affordable-wine-lists.html

How long do gems stay hidden when they are posted on Wine Berserkers? Isn’t this like travel magazines that lead with an article about the top 10 undiscovered beaches you should visit this year?

I see what you mean. I’m not sure how big this community is in NYC and if the forum is widely accessed or more self contained? But I feel like if anyone deserves to know about these places, it’s people who love and care about wine.
