NYC - November 13th - Wine Dinner - Blind Tasting - MW Style: 3 Wines, Same Grape, Different Region

When : Thursday, November 13th, 5:30 sit down for Champagne. The tasting dinner will commence at 5:50pm. I’ll get there just after 5pm if anyone gets out early and do their blind flight.

Requirements : For this dinner you will bring at least three bottles of wine. All three wines must be the same grape or 75% of the same grape (if it is a blend). The wines must be in three levels of pricing, one under $50, one between $50 and $100, and one over $125. Bring your bottles covered, this is a blind tasting. You also must do different regions (can be same country though). Example: Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast Kutch, 1er Cru Burgundy, Krug Clos d’Ambonnay. If you have to question if its too close of a region, its too close (Napa/Sonoma are too close–all in North Coast), Barolo/Barbaresco are both Piedmonte.

Where : Corkbuzz Chelsea Market (75 9th Avenue)

How : When you arrive, please ensure the wine bottles are concealed (in a bag or aluminum foil or something to cover them) and at the proper cellar temperature. The target amount of people for this dinner will be 11-12, once you go above 12 it can get too unruly, and there won’t be enough wine for each person—we’d like to keep this as a “mostly peaceful tasting.” Each person will pass their bottles around and the group will taste them and attempt to determine what they are. Once everyone has tried them we will guess the region, variety and price. The wines will be revealed each time after the round of guessing. How formal or casual your guesses are will totally be up to you; WSET, CMS, or just winging it are all fine…

Cost : The cost is expected to be around $150. This includes free corkage, and gratuity. They provide all the stems, excellent service and great food.

Why : Because this is what they do in the D3 WSET Diploma and MW exams–but I bet our wines will be better. Will be fun to identify the grape but also the quality levels.

Some people have chatted me ahead of time, so saving a few extra spots for them to confirm their availability.
