NYC – March 24th Blind Wine Tasting Dinner – BIG, BOLD, YOUTHFUL

Will you all be double decanting your wines beforehand? What’s the usual procedure for these dinners?

I will be. If you want your wines to show well, you probably want to give them some air ahead of time.

Younger wines with higher tannin usually need a decant. Since we can’t decant everything at the restaurant, it would be prudent to double decant if you can

Will do thanks!

If you can double decant ahead of time that would be awesome. Not everyone can.

Did someone say they needed an expert at giving novice opinions? Just for you Peter not only have I finally READ the requirements, but I am rearranging my schedule to accommodate…

SWEET! Someone needs to keep Jay in check!

Not possible. I am old enough that I do not have to worry.

We are too aware!!!

We have one drop due to COVID… if anyone wants to take their spot last minute and have the wines, ping me. Can’t wait for the dinner tomorrow!

Excited for tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing everyone

Does the definition of the verb, “to Pobega” require that you open the bottle before the delivery person leaves the porch? I will be bringing a Thomas Rivers Brown wine (he consults on enough that I can still serve it blind) that was delivered today and an [anonymous] that was delivered a few days ago. Youthful enough for you?

I trust your judgement

Great evening last night. Wonderful crowd, amazing wines. A couple things learned, several more confirmed.

  1. It turns out that @J_a_y_H_a_c_k is on the bottle of SQN. Who knew. Photo for proof.

  2. Winebeserkers are generous and wonderful people. Wine is such a wonderful thing to bring people together from different backgrounds all sharing a common passion.

  3. Non consensus on WOTN, as there were so many. Three people brought Sine Qua Non, we had Scarecrow a couple from RIISE, and so much more. Black Sears, Tench and Scarecrow tended to rise to the top.

  4. Even though every one of these wines was on the younger side of drinking, turns out new world big wines are still great. A 24 hour decant for big Brunellos will also do wonders.

  5. After a few of these wines, palate fatigue sets in and makes guessing very hard.

  6. The next event has been set and will be posted soon. April 23rd, 2 wines, same region.

Echoing Peter here. We had a wonderful night with an abundance of great wine. Infanticide was committed enough times to desensitize even the most ardent opponents, but who cares? That was essentially the point of the theme.

I struggle with palate fatigue during most of these dinners, but never moreseo than last night. We often lament the same that a wine wasn’t prepared perfectly or the flight order was wrong, but there wasn’t much we could realistically do at the end of this one to make sure that wines expressed themselves to their fullest. Regardless, it was tons of fun!

Thanks to all in attendance for their generosity, sharing great wine that we all likely opened against our better judgement.

I do not understand how the young ones in the group have so much trouble with palate fatigue. No duds. The only disappointment was the Insignia, and that was disappointing only because it needed at least another decade. The same was probably also true with the Scarecrow, which I did not guess, although I own it.

I admit that the AFWEs in the group could argue that the power of Cali wines overshadow the terroir so there is more similarity than, let’s say, Lafite versus Mouton.

Ah yes… and I learned a new term last night. AFWE. Definitely an old rabbit hole to dive into on that one. That’s to the OG’s @J_a_y_H_a_c_k and @TGigante for bringing this old term to light.

It is a term that IIRC, was coined by RMP after he was criticized by Keith Levenberg. Keith has a number of endearing characteristics. He is an excellent writer and his palate is nothing other than accurate. However, his taste in wine is about as acceptable as his taste in politics.
