NYC – June 2nd Blind Wine Tasting Dinner – España Olé

When : Monday, June 2nd 5:30 sit down and do their blind white wine flight. The tasting dinner will commence at 6pm. I’ll get there at 5pm if anyone gets out early; we will order a bottle of Champagne off their menu.

Requirements : This dinner is about wines from Spain. For this dinner you are going to bring at least two bottles of dry wine from Spain, at least one needs to be more than $125. If you insist of bringing Sherry, that can be your third wine—totally encouraged. Pretty simple rules. Wines will be tasted blind, blancos first, then rosados, then tintas.

Where : Corkbuzz 13 e 13th street (Union Square)

How : When you arrive, please ensure the bottles are concealed (in a bag or aluminum foil or something to cover them) and at the correct cellar temperature. The target amount of people for this dinner will be 11-12, once you go above 12 it can get too unruly, and there won’t be enough wine for each person—we’d like to keep this as a “mostly peaceful tasting.” Each person will pass their bottles around and the group will taste them and attempt to determine what they are. Once everyone has tried them we will guess the region, variety and price. The wines will be revealed each time after the round of guessing. How formal or casual your guesses are will totally be up to you; WSET, CMS, or just winging it are all fine… If you want to decant, you are free to do whatever you need to have your wines showing their best.

Cost : The cost is expected to be around $150. This includes free corkage, and gratuity. They provide all the stems, excellent service and great food.

Why : Because wines from Spain are awesome and although they have the largest vineyards in the world, and are the third largest producer of wine in the world, they seem to be far down the list of places people bring wine for these dinners.

I should be OK by then so I want to jump in. What is this bias against Sherry? There is a very old Toro Albala PX at auction I saw yesterday.

Assuming that I can eat and drink by then, I am in. But what is this price increase to $125? It’s already hard enough to sneak in a bottle of SQN and claim that it is Garnacha from the Campo de Borja.

No bias against Sherry, just don’t want this to be an all Sherry evening… we already have that. But again, encouraged to bring one. To answer your other question, 1) why not and 2) people are usually bringing $200+ bottles anyway and 3) tariffs? no rhyme or reason…

and yes, as always, rules are made to be broken, but only on the upside. Brining a SQN Garnacha is a perfect example of an acceptable rule breaking. bring that PX too! sounds like a perfect night cap.

Thanks Peter! Excited to be here. I love Spanish wines so hopefully this won’t be a one-off event!
