Non Grand Cru closest to Romanee Conti??

What non grand cru vineyard is closest to RC? And who has control over the closest parcels?

Looks to be Aux Reignots?

Yes,

Aux Reignots is closest, but still separated from RomanĂ©e-Conti by La RomanĂ©e. Furthermore, the village vineyard “Aux Champs Perdrix” to the south of Aux Reignots is geographically equidistant to RomanĂ©e conti, albeit only with its westernmost tip. You can bet your life however, that there is a reason why it is a village, like a fault line or slightly different exposition.

I have no idea who owns the parcels to the extreme west of aforementioned vineyards, but I wouldn’t place too much value on that information.

Reignots. I know the information about who owns what parcels is out there, but I forget where. I don’t know if you can expect a Romanee-Conti resemblance, but Reignots seems to have an expression all its own which can sometimes rival the grand crus.

Reignots producers are:

  • Comte liger Belair (biggest holding) prices easily beat many Grand crus

  • Arnoux Lachaux, Cathiard (young vines) and Grivot (minute quantity)

Cool climate more about refinment than power. Have never had Romanee Conti (and never expect to) so can’t say whether it can taste a bit like it. Have had the Grivot 2000 and it was superb (great nose, superb balance
) but certainly not a blockbuster

Is this a question akin to the California wines that try to sell on the basis of being ‘just downwind’ or ‘across the field’ from some famous cult vineyard?

Also, Petits Monts is just a few meters farther away. Biggest owners are Véronique Drouhin and DRC

Liger Belair Reignots can be pretty amazing

Domaine Serene. Just fold the map.

Makes me think of the Mouton joke.

Does Arnoux still make Reignots? it was always a favorite.

At Liger-Belair’s prices I don’t know if the idea of buying premier cru as a value play makes a lot of sense. Hey, for less coin you can buy La Grande Rue, which is even closer!

Yep.

Or across the street

Look at Grand Rue, a fraction of all it’s neighbors, and acheiving new heights. Also just as pricey ax the Reignots mentioned.

I’d put say the '08 Reignots up against the '08 Grand Rue any day

Whilst they may indeed be improving, certainly some earlier vintages of GR have been a bit hit and miss

Agree. I just donated some 96 (miss) to one of my favorite charity auctions.

That is an excellent joke
if we are thinking of the same one. Starts off, “The Baron walks into a restaurant in Paris and asks for a bottle of '45 Mouton
”

That’s a big yep

That’s the one.

Le Grande Rue is a Grand Cru. [cheers.gif]

Just looked at Farr and vintners:

  • Reignots belair 2009 : 3600 ÂŁ ib (AM 92-94) (His Echezeaux is same price and 92-95)
  • Grand rue 2009: 2400 ÂŁ ib (AM 92-95)

At these prices, I hope there are pretty good

More down to earth, I just opened a Grivot NSG les Lavieres 2009 for lunch and it’s an absolutely delicious wine, not overripe or hot at all, showing lots of fruit and freshness but not showing much complexity at this stage. Could drink this all day long
and I believe it will stay delicious for his life. Still a few hundred yards from La Conti

Have been trying to work out who owns which parts of “Aux Champs Perdrix” because when we pinched a fee post harvest grapes (many bunches that were not perfect were left), they to my palate were second only to RC at the beginning of September.

Les Reignots is the closest 1er Cru, but being split from RC by La Romanée, which has a quite different character to RC, you wont be getting a baby RC from Les Reignots IMHO. At which point, La Grande Rue or richebourg from the vines right next to RC are more likely to give you that affect.
