Haven’t been to Prune in ages, but have been tinkering with doing dinner the last couple of months. If food and service stood the way they were when I used to go, $35 corkage is OK for me.
im a massive prune fan and appreciate their approach to food. their wine list is small and lacking so i always like to bring a nice bottle and share with the staff.
I attended a birthday dinner last night at Batard in Tribeca. The guest of honor brought multiple top bottles ('01 d’Yquem), many in magnum ('93 Vilmart Coeur de Cuvée, '85 Pichon Lalande). The group consisted of friends who have been tasting wine together for two decades. Batard did an excellent job on all levels. The food was excellent, every course. Service was perfect. We paid corkage (not sure exactly whether it was a lump sum or by the bottle) and the dinner was definitely expensive. However, if you are considering a high-end wine dinner at a top notch Manhattan restaurant, Batard should be on your list to consider.
Hadn’t been to Racines in a few months. Shan’s group met there last night for dinner and some Nuits St. Georges. First, the food: loved the chicken liver mousse, steak tartar and the duck. Substituted cheese for dessert. But what really grabs me, what makes Racines a gem in the NYC wine scene, is its laid back yet quality vibe, its welcoming of wine with enthusiasm, and the desire of its owners that the patrons have a great evening. And don’t you love it when the people at the next table are also oenophiles and that leads to discussion and passing of tastes? Happy to return here again and again.
I love the vibe at Racines but I think the food could be better. I usually leave there still hungry and the undercooked pork we were served at a meal there last week didn’t help.
I like the food (and vibe) at racines. The heirloom bean appetizer was great, as was the cabbage appetizer and the pork entree. The portion size can be slightly small… but with dessert and bottle of wine I have never left truly hungry…
Middle eastern, casual/younger vibe in the back of a hotel lobby. Tough location but I can see the food carrying this place for some time (has been open for 5 months). A place not to be hyped, but be pleasantly surprised by.
We did one order of the mezze and one order of the short rib plate. Both were excellent. The mezze comes out packed with flavor and fresh ingredients… ?ten? different small plates. The side salad captures the fresh flavors with added dill and mint. The short rib is like a steak sliced on the bone that is very tender and very nicely charred… pairs nicely with a red. Dessert was weak.
Ok stems (no oversized bowls) but with friendly, laid back service.
Utterly appalling customer service at Côte, which ended up with me paying $65 for the “privilege” of opening my bottle of wine and not having any food. Can’t recall an experience this bad in NYC, will not be back.
Wow, totally weird. I sure hope you didn’t pay at the bar for them to open up your bottle. Did you even get glasses and get to drink the wine at the bar? Or did you get charged to just open a bottle and have to leave?
I’ve never brought wine to Cote. Usually have had a set dinner course or some such that ends up being about 65–70/pp for food. And the grill is right on the table. The booth marble table is pretty big could fit 4-6 ppl and so much space, it’s not a tiny place like most nyc restaurants. Albeit I feel like they don’t have many tables
In the heart of flatiron, nomad. I’ve never had bad service here and I went on a weekend for dinner I think. That’s is pretty bad not to have been able to have the grilled steak with dinner and wine. Usually service is quick as you grill at the table. (After your note, I did look up the wine list. I may buy wine next time, they have some good bottles. I suspect they probably have/use good glasses too). I remember the plates being custom or matching the table setting last time.
I opened one of our bottles and as we were waiting for our last party member (who was late), they cancelled our reservation, didn’t tell us and informed me they didn’t have another table for 1.5 hours. So…effectively I paid $65 to open and drink the bottle. I was standing 5 feet from the host who didn’t bother informing me of any of this. Their justification? But we sent a text to your 212 number! The equivalent of sending smoke signals to Mars.
As I was walking to another restaurant to get some food, got an email that my reservation at Cote was cancelled. LOL. I’ve eaten at Cote before, and the food is fine, but I’m definitely not returning. There are lots of options in NYC, especially in Flatiron.
I feel like someone posted about kochi. Couldnt remember who. Thank you! The best food and wine pairing. Was able to bring some aged pinot and chardonnay. Perfect pairing. The are getting liq license next week. So this may be the last weekend to byo.
sorry for the terrible cote experience. i went there maybe 2 years ago when they opened with all of that buzz. i was very unimpressed with the food. as we left our seats, i noticed that i had gum on my jeans thanks to the previous guests…and the staff didnt bother to clean the table completely. i was quite insulted and the staff just shrugged. i dont recall them doing anything to rectify the situation.
the food was just a hair above a korean bbq joint. ive forgotten about the place since my visit.
