We just had The Milling Room cancel another Tuesday wine dinner there. After accepting the reservation they came back two weeks later and said the group was too large. And this dinner was organized by someone who is a friend of the chef - apparently the management isn’t happy with large tastings.
Yes, though the group did balloon to over 18 people. A group that size is a bit tough to accommodate on an evening that’s become a busy night for them. I can’t really begrudge them, though given the relationship and the point of the dinner, it would’ve been nice.
Personally I’ve loved the food, especially any seafood preps. Desserts have been a bit so-so but that’s really the least important part of a wine dinner. Caveat - haven’t been for a few months.
To be fair, gigantic wine dinners ruin the atmosphere for the rest of the diners, and that’s a nice restaurant that plenty of people go to who don’t want to witness 18 drunk people arguing about wine. I’m quite sympathetic to the restaurant.
Public in NoLita. $25, no limit. Glasses good. Food well-prepared and interesting, if not always entirely successful. Service a little on the slow/distracted side, but they decanted for us and brought us clean stems, and they let us bring five bottles and occupy a table for three hours on a Saturday night with none of the fuss or dirty looks you can get in that situation. I’ll go back.
Emphatic agreement, this was about as good as BYO experience as I’ve had on a Saturday night, especially in a well-located restaurant with decent food and a nice vibe.
456 Shanghai Cuisine, on Mott Street in Chinatown. Corkage is free. Bring stems. Good soup dumplings and other dim sum, some other decent Shanghai-style dishes.
Brasserie was $20. Good stems and attitude. Cooking seems to have come up a notch or two. They are busy for business lunches and dinners, but easy to get a reservation for dinner especially weekends.
