New Wine Review Purchased by "Unicorn Auctions"

Is this another sign of ‘end of times’ for the wine biz or simply consolidation?

Anyone ever used ‘Unicorn Auctions’…based out of Chicago.

I was wondering the same! Never heard of them.

Isn’t unicorn mostly tater spirits, particularly Bourbon?

Yea

I’ve bought from Unicorn and generally had a good experience with liquor. My only issue was with an 80s Wild Turkey that leaked in transit and they said that their insurance only covers breakage. The big downside is that they charge Chicago sales tax on everything, but besides that I’m not sure how it’s any better/worse than Winebid.

Just checking, I want to try them out with the NWR subscriber offer but their shipping page is sort of cryptic. When you had them ship stuff, was it easy and normally priced or are there bottle / fee minimums to ship?

Shipping was reasonable with them, but I’m also only a state over. No bottle or fee minimums at the time. I think there’s about a 3-4 week lag between auction close and shipping though.

I’m showing $100/case on their shipping cost page.

Wow maybe my memory is off

I got an email from NWR that includes a code for a $100 credit at unicorn auctions. If you’re a NWR member check your email.

they are killing it with bourbon/spirits.

can’t imagine them doing well in the wine auction market with so many well established auction houses out there.

Didn’t understand the title as I had never heard of NWR

Code is NWR100, no idea how theyll dofferentiate between subscribers and non, or even if they want to

I couldn’t see anything on their shipping page but I figured I would roll the dice with the $100 off. Scored 2 bottles of Rhys Syrah. They want another $50 to ship them, though. Brutal. Might just hold them there for the low storage cost, try to grab a few more bottles over the summer, and ship them when things cool down.

Might be a mistake, they sent an email out saying that some people were incorrectly charged. I’m guessing your charges are closer to $35 (still a lot): Shipping Process & Costs at Unicorn Auctions

Thanks and good to know. Yeah, looks like maybe it was quoting me the Spirits shipping cost. Based on the table in that link, I think I’ll still try to get 4 more bottles if I spot any good deals, then ship 6 for $48 as opposed to 2 for $34.
