I know early in the year and after a disappointing Clarendon Hills Grenache was not expecting much from the 11 vintage but this rocks!!!
2011 Clarendon Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Sandown- Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon (4/6/2022)
Day 1: Every now and then you get a wine that is polarizing and this is it. Dark purple and perfect cork. The funk on this wine is off the charts in a good way. Funk, blueberries, cigar, spice, minerals, dust, rose petals and pepper. The concentration on the finish is dense. Medium plus finish and nice acidity. This is my new favorite wine of the year. 94 points
Day 2: Most anticipated day 2 experience of the year. It is again outstanding while a bit different. The amazing funk nose and palate has soften but this wine now reveals: Blueberries, minerals, dark chocolate, tar, spice, black pepper and forest floor. Picks up some menthol on this concentrated medium plus finish. Equally as good and hard to save any for day 3 but I will. 94 points. (94 pts.)
Two great wines I paid under $30 for that I have had this year were 2017 Bernard Moreau Bourgogne Blanc and 2016 Hudelot-Noellat Bourgogne Rouge. Really enjoyed both.
Granbazan Albarino Amber Label. Fruit, minerals, hint of salt. Delicious with lobster, scallops, shrimp, crab. $25.00 retail. Gone through a couple cases.
Tarima Hills Monastrell 2017, but mostly the winery overall produces amazing value Spanish wines. They can produce wines with acidity, minerality, and controlled oak treatment and price the wines way lower than expected. Most of their wines wholesale/import price are sub $10.
Solid overall but never really got into the hype of Lopez de Heredia. Seems like all of their wines are 90 point averages. I didn’t realize this was everyone else posting their wine candiaiate of the year for under $30. Better change the title.
For sure this thread is to feature the Clarendon Hills but if I just posted that no one would look at it as it is from Australia even though it is one of the best wines I have tasted in a few years.
This thread is 94 points or higher. Get those Monastrell wines off my thread. Honestly get the Clarendon Hills and free shipping on a bottle. I bought six more and might be one of the better wines in the last few years for the money. Including Davenport which Kris will respect!
