Conspiracy theorist in me wonders if they get paid per attempt instead of per success or something? While it clearly varies from driver to driver within any delivery company, it’s also as clear as it’s ever been that Fedex Home / Ground is by far the worst. Seems like a question of management, not drivers, to me.
I have my answer from FedEx: long story short, bc other deliveries in the area were made, they believe that must mean their driver attempted ours (how’s that for logic!). Their offer : we can try again tomorrow but we can’t specify a time. So, for my trouble, I can get more of the same!
I will let you all fill in the blank on what my response was.
I did thank the rep for trying but let her know how disappointing the solutions were.
I’m done with FedEx, and unfortunately with every winery and retailer that doesn’t offer me another option.
This is what I was going to bring up having just read this thread today. It sounds like an issue of compensation. How many stories are in this thread alone of people being home and seeing a delivery guy take the time to walk to the door with a notice but not the actual goods? This is clearly not merely an issue of ineptness. Something is driving these guys to this behavior.
If we’re going to lump the USPS into this story, I’d be happy to pile on.
Yesterday, we were waiting for the mail to come. It usually comes around noon. At 4:00, it still wasn’t here. So I look out of my second floor window, and I see the post lady sitting in her truck, sucking on wings. Just gnawing the sumbitches down to the bone. I take a call, and ten minutes later, I hang up. Still no postchick. I look out the window, and she’s still gnawing on chicken wings. What, did she order like 30 of them? Mail of course had wing sauce on it.
Thanks, sweetie - only five hours late.
Neither rain, nor snow, nor gloom of night… but no one said nuthin about wings…
I had the fake-delivery attempt happen for the first time with FedEx Ground recently. And here I thought it was just me!
Recently ordered a US Mint coin. On the expected delivery date, my wife heard the UPS truck drive away - she looked on the door and was an “we’ll deliver later” note. No doorbell (which was working). This suggests that the package might not have even been on the truck - why else not see if people are really home?
Never had this problem with either Fedex or UPS, and most of the wine I buy is shipped to me. Four possible reasons: a) two barking Springer Spaniels that hear the truck coming down the road long before I do and sound the advanced alert, b) if I’m around, I go out to meet the truck and help offload, c) I try to be nice around the Holiday season and take care of the drivers, or d) I’ve just lucked out with drivers that care about doing their job.
I simply won’t order if FedEx ground is the option. UPS has been great.
My story. Same thing. Expecting wine, home all day 2 days in a row. Can see online that it was mysteriously attempted even though I am home. No door tag. Guy never tried. Phone calls get the big run around both days.
Next day roll around, no one comes. So, I have somewhere to be and I leave the apartment building. Tag on the door. But wait! The FedEx truck is still here, parked across the street with the driver in it! I take the tag and knock on the door. After a few long moments, he rolls his head to me and I ask politely for my package.
“I am on lunch. Come back in half an hour”
“But I can’t wait. I have an appointment in 15 minutes. Can’t you just give me the box so it doesn’t get sent back to California?”
“No. I’m on lunch”
“Please?”
“No. too bad”
No further response.
Customer service couldn’t have cared less. Letter and email to Fedex went unanswered.
Fark 'em forever.
You should’ve opened the back door of the truck and started rooting around for your package. When he starts raising hell: “I thought you were on lunch for the next 30 minutes?”
Wow! What arrogance. ![]()
Gotta remember, FedEx Ground is the re-branding of Roadway and (as I think has been pointed out) the drivers are independent contractors. Goes a long way to explaining the occasionally glaring service differences between Ground and Express.
Wow, Paul, that’s an amazing account of an awful work ethic.
The regional differences in both outcomes and attitudes could not be more different; my local people from all the delivery services, including USPS, couldn’t be nicer or more helpful (which isn’t to say that the packages always arrive on time.)
That is just gold.
My FedEx guy shows up apologetically past 9pm. I guess I should be thankful in retrospect. But UPS here rocks and the depot is less than a mile away.
That’s happened to me more times I care to remember. Never even tries to get out of the vehicle and come to the door. Just puts the notice in the mailbox with the rest of the mail and drives off. Hell, I remember one time I just happened to be standing in front of the window when she pulled up. B!tch saw me and still put the tag in the mailbox and drove off.
I’ve had this issue … it sucks! Primarily with FEDEX Home where I used to live. Complain all you want (Managers, Hub Superintendent & Regional VP’s did nothing - I even wrote the CEO) they never did $hit about it. I have taken the path of least resistance and regularly bribe those who work my route with bottles of wine and cash at the holidays. Since I adopted this policy I have almost never had an issue.
I have a theory about shit like this … remember the stupid bully kid with dried snot rings on his nose that always gave you shit … well when we grow up this is THAT GUY! And he’s still making your life hell …
As I sit here waiting at 6:48pm for a case of wine delivered by FedEx Home (on vehicle for delivery since 8:17am!), my hopes are now lower than the Euro…

I thought he looked familiar.
Too bad the American work ethic isn’t what it used to be.
FedEx, I apologize for my lack of faith. 7:19, just arrived.
As long as we’re sharing… Last year I sent some papers to my Mom out west via UPS standard.
Shipment goes via plane to Vancouver overnight and is sent to Nanaimo on Vanc. Isld next day. UPS doesn’t deliver to the small island my Mom lives on, so as I learn later, UPS procedure is to drop it in the mail for the final 60km (as the crow flies).
Canada post takes another week+ to deliver, doesn’t actually deliver but Mom is left a voice message that her package is at the local post office and she should pick up.
Charges?
$18 for the overnight and next day ferry to Nanaimo
$25 for the 60km which would have cost me $1.10 in postage had I mailed myself.
Their initial argument was that delivery was within there standard delivery schedule.
Needless to say I did NOT pay that invoice.
I think the who is worse, Fedex vs UPS is a local issue. I have great fedex drivers, but the UPS guys can’t find their ass with both hands. Gusmer sent me a package that had doubled my order. They tell me they will credit once they get the stuff back. Then, UPS drops off a package but does not pick up the stuff for gusmer. It has been on my porch for most of a week now. Each day they say they are coming. Each day it is still there. I call gusmer again and UPS tells them the guy will come get it. I hope they don’t plan to sell that stuff to someone else. ![]()
