Tomato sauce with sugar? I’m assuming you mean added sugar? Nothing I buy ever has added sugar in it.
…these ingredients alone have a ton of sugar in them:
3/4c. ketchup (I use Heinz)
3/4c. tomato sauce
6T. salsa
2T. barbeque sauce
Yes on ketchup and (most) barbecue sauce; no on tomato sauce and (most) salsa.
Ketchup averages 55 grams of sugars per cup. Heinz is a bit higher at 64g/cup.
Barbecue sauce averages 65 grams of sugars per cup. Kraft Original is well above average, at 104 g/cup.
Tomato sauce, on the other hand, averages 10.4 grams of sugars per cup. Hunt’s is a bit lower: 8g/cup. That’s the natural sugars in the tomatoes, by the way: the ingredient list does not include any sugars.
Salsa averages 4 grams of sugars per cup. Pace Thick & Chunky is higher, at 16 g/cup.
and bell peppers are very sweet.
“Very sweet”? That depends on the individual palate. But bell peppers most certainly are not high in sugars. Green bell peppers average 2.4 grams of sugars per 100 grams (3.58 grams of sugars per cup of chopped peppers). Red bell peppers, as you might expect, are higher in sugars - but still low: 4.2g/100g (6.3g/cup chopped).

That can of tomato soup at 23g sugar/10-3/4oz can is looking downright diet now. ![]()
Brian Tuite: David K o l i n:I just got a shiver up my spine with the “mayo” reference. Sheesh
There’s something genetically wrong with people who don’t like mayo.
Mayo is the spawn of Satan.
