Indeed!
Which Proms concert? I love the Proms, but absolutely despise summer airline travel and crowds, so haven’t been in ten years.
Vienna Phil!
Bruckner’s 9th? or the Mozart/Tchaikovsky?
This Saturday’s Proms has the very rarely heard Schreker symphony as well as Golda Schultz singing late 20th c. arias. ![]()
Will do a full recap of all of the spots visited, but long story short…Mountain was the star of the show.
We had great meals this weekend at Dishoom Covent Garden, Noble Rot SoHo, Bar Tozino, and Darjeeling Express. Also had a pretty solid Fish n Chips at Rock and Sole Place and we had tea at The Ritz. The only miss for us was tea at the Ritz. I’m sure it is great for some people but it was just not our vibe- the relaxed nature of all the other meals much more enjoyable to us. The Coravin list at Noble Rot was bangin: Ulysse Colin, Dom, Arnoux Lachaux, Les Horees, E Pepe, Allemand, D’yqem, Cotat, Roulot…. Wish we woulda skipped the Ritz and just had enough room to do the roast chicken here with some Roulot instead but alas…. Everything we got was still good. standout dishes as Darjeeling, a lamb curry and an eggplant with peanutty curry.
We also stopped in Fortnum and Mason and Berry Bros and Rudd. The selections there were great. Actually some pretty solid deals to be found (compared to what I see in SC at least)
Nice, thanks for the report! Do you think Noble Rot is the type of place you can just pop in for a drink, or is it truly just a restaurant? Our upcoming trip’s meal slots are largely filled but that list sounds very tempting.
It probably depends a bit on the night- we were there on Halloween and all of SOHO/Covent Gardens was just… nutzo. But they were turning people away who didnt have reservations when we were there and it was full upstairs and down.
Lunchtime might be a different story as well.
I usually go to the Lambs Conduit location as it’s close to where I stay, and the front area is all unreserved. No problem to pop in for glasses or bottles, though do be aware they don’t serve the full menu if you want that, only bar menu. I’ve heard that the chef at Soho is better currently, but if you are just there for wine it doesn’t matter.
I am planning on going to the Lamb’s Conduit location too for a solo lunch in a few weeks. It looks like that location has a bar, but not sure the others do from their photos on Google. Sarah, do you know if the Lamb’s the only one with an actual bar? Thanks.
I don’t know, sorry.
I was last there in July and had an excellent lunch. A friend was there more recently and was disappointed in his meal, so do with those datapoints what you will.
Mayfair has a bar and small tables up front for walk ins, like Lambs Conduit.
Thank you Sarah and Joe!
On a flight back from London capped off by the Radiohead show at the O2…some restaurant highlights:
-One of the best meals of my life at Tamarind - high end, but not fussy, Indian. Also a solid wine list (we had two great bottles — a wonderful Schafer Frolich gg and a closed but still nice Trimbach Frederic Emile). By contrast, relatively disappointing meal at Dishoom in Shoreditch — felt like it was past its best days
-Singburi - upscale Thai in Shoreditch - drinks are uninteresting but excellent food - try the lamb ribs and the eggplant, both fantastic
-Had lunch at Padella in Borough Market — very solid pasta, good vibe. Wouldn’t rush to it but very nice if looking for something easy in the area
Rest of the meals were unremarkable one way or another.
Going to be spending some extended time in London soon. I have lots of proper restaurants I can’t wait to visit, but any suggestions for casual weeknight spots, ideally with strong takeout/delivery options?
Thanks!
Resuscitation!
Spending a week in Chelsea/Pimlico mid Jan house hunting and working.
Have reservations for Dishoom and Medlar. Any casual breakfast spots of note? What else should I be considering? Caveat: traveling with a 2 year old.
Cheers
House-hunting! You’ve had it with Miami?
We stay near Sloane Square a few times a year. For dining in Pimlico try Lorne. Cornus ( same owners as Medlar) between Pimlico and Chelsea (both very wine friendly) and Elystan Street in Chelsea (dependable 1*), although not sure if this is what you will be looking for with a two year old in tow.
These are good for breakfast near Sloane Square; Grainger in Pavilion Road, Colbert on Sloane Square and The Black Penny, Duke of York Square. There are many more in both categories but these are our defaults.
Medlar on Sundays is such a great deal.
