Lay flat wine boxes

Hello,

Planning to store my wine in an offsite storage unit. They allow lay flat boxes. Any recommendations where to get them? Western WI/ MN area.
Storage unit sells them for $10 each. Not certain on the quality. So far, I had seen Domaine’s which looks durable but more than $10.

Thanks.

Domaine’s are $10.50. They are fine

Same boy as you, probably will take a shot at these.

Shipping costs through WineShippingBoxes are crazy expensive!

You are correct, didn’t bother to go through the check out process, shipping is like 75% the cost of the actual boxes.

Those are cheap boxes with thin sides (good boxes are double walled) and are smaller than Domaine or Vine Vault boxes which means they won’t hold larger Burgundy bottles or taller Champagne bottles.

I think you are in Atlanta in which case you can purchase directly from Vine Vault or Buckhead Wine Cellars and there’s no shipping cost.

Domaines boxes are very nice and durable (for cardboard)

I use Domaine boxes and stack them 6 high. good boxes

Vine Vault boxes are good, a little sturdier than Domaine and seem to accommodate more bottle sizes.

Do you have any retail wine stores nearby? I find that several places I buy from often have empty 2x6 and 3x4 cardboard boxes available for putting in purchase, even if just a few bottles.

My current bulk storage is something like 6 feet tall - would want greater than six high if i was consolidating to a single box size. Thinking double-walled is the way to go but unlike Domaine, folks selling these generally don’t seem to state the maximum stacking count, although a google search for “wine boxes lay flat double walled” returns several results.

I stack 10/11 high.

Domaine boxes are great, though i find they can start to crush when you get beyond 6 cases high unless you’re very careful with how they’re lined up.

Shipping is $30 on the order, so you’ll definitely pay more than $10/each in the end. However, note they’re also available through Amazon, which allows you to get the 5% cash back if you’re an Amazon Prime cardholder:

Wine Storage Boxes - Layflat Style - 12 Bottle 750 ML (QTY: 10 Boxes)

Usually it’s the same price as buying direct, though Domaine occasionally runs sales which make ordering direct cheaper.

Note they also make a 6 bottle version.

From the pics in Amazon, it looks like Domaine themselves cheat on the stacking count.

Another thing to bear in mind when stacking is that, with decent storage humidity, cardboard will start to weaken over time and the walls can start to buckle.

I stack 2x6 cardboard boxes 6 high in locker. Have had 24 case locker for 20-plus years and most cardboard boxes last pretty well. I swap out old boxes occasionally when they start to come apart; usually one of the seams.

Vine Vault are the best, but their website has shown out of stock for many months. Domaine are probably the best alternative I’ve seen widely available. Whatever you do, don’t buy cheap boxes. Andrew is absolutely right about double walled being essential. Yes, they still wear over time, but my Vine Vault boxes have easily lasted several years and are still in great shape.

They just confirmed by phone that they no longer sell boxes. fwiw, they are aka Western Carriers.

I prefer the six bottle uline boxes. It’s much easier to pick up a six pack than a case. They have built in handles also. They stacked nicely and are easy to move around.

Uline also makes 12 pack lay flats
