Im getting old and its getting to be a pain to lift and move around 12 bottle boxes. A box with 6 is a breeze and can easily be carried in one hand with the built in handle
Does anyone who uses the Domaine boxes know how well they fit Huet bottles (or, I suppose, larger burgundy bottles like PYCM, champagne, etc.)?
All of those bottles fit. Occasionally, a champagne bottle will be a little tight.
Riesling bottles fit, too, but you have to rotate them 90 degrees.
I have used Domaine boxes for about 10 years and like them. I will give one recent warning, however. Last time I bought them through Amazon, what arrived was actually Uovo boxes. The boxes are identical, with one exception: the Uovo boxes are dark purple. This color scheme makes it much harder to read the marker on the side, denoting what is inside the boxes. I am not sure why they chose this color. It seems like anyone that actually uses them could tell you switching from the light brown to purple was not a great idea.
That’s interesting. As of December 2024, the Chicago UOVO location was still selling Domaine boxes.
Paging @Ian_Dorin
I wish Uovo would switch to the Vine Vault box supplier. Slightly wider and fit more types of bottles.
UOVO acquired Domaine a year or two back, but it doesn’t seem like there’s been much operational change. So it makes sense that they’re selling the same boxes, just rebranded.
Thanks Patrick!
We take all feedback seriously, and just passed this along. Thanks all!
These aren’t even rebranded. They still say “Domaine.” And my OCD self is happier for it.
Ian,
Thanks for your response and for passing it along. Below is a picture I happened to have on my phone. It is not great, but I think you can see how much easier it is to see the standard black sharpie on the Domaine boxes than on the Uovo boxes:
One potential option, if getting rid of the purple is not an option, would be to swap the purple into the white stripe and make the rest of the box white. I could always move the writing into the white, but I think having it in the center of the box looks a bit sloppy. And, more importantly, on the side of the box, where I also include the info re what wine is in the box, is almost entirely purple, so moving the writing into a white part is not really an option.
I switched over to these a few months ago and bought a pack of large stick-on labels. The color of the box does not matter.
I was hoping that the thickness and toughness of the cardboard used would be better. But these work.
Yes, I have a bunch and they are convenient, but the tape often breaks when you stack them on their side due to the pressure and the boxes aren’t even close to the same size so stacking isn’t always easy. So I’ve moved away from them even though the 12 pack boxes are a pain to move around.
I always write on labels and then place the labels on the box, problem solved.
All of the storage facilites use labels as well.
Interesting but not my experience
I have a hodge podge of lay flat boxes that other people have abandoned in my bulk locker, and then a racking locker for wines I plan on drinking soonish/for easy access. I would ask the owner of the storage facility if they have lay flat boxes that no one is using that they plan on recycling. Many commercial enterprises and or large collectors ship by the pallet in lay flat boxes that are immediately unpacked and eventually recycled. I’ve never had to buy any.
I got a bunch of 12 bottle boxes from winebid when they took a bunch of wine because I had them mostly in lay flat boxes.
