The new UI is so awful. Only upside I can see is I guess I’ll be spending far less money with them.
Can’t really disagree. They previously had maybe the best site for browsing and purchasing of any retailer around. I can’t find anything I would say is an improvement in the new version, and much about it is less convenient. Biggest complaint is that what used to be nicely compact and efficient for scrolling through now takes up much more real estate and time to browse. What used to be a quick look is now a much bigger task, which is a disincentive to spend time there.
All that and cloudflare problems too…
When I noticed it back in May, I sent them an email with the same general comment and a humble request for the restoration of a compact view…not that I expected a response, but just to register feedback. I still like them as a shop, but I’m not really inclined to browse their site as it is, so I’m sure that’ll affect my purchasing going forward.
You’ve summed up my feelings pretty well. They took the best wine retail site in America and just flat out enshittified it. It’s like my grandfather’s phone, all the fonts and images turned up to 200%. Are they building a retail wine site for geriatrics? Among my many other gripes, here’s one that really bugs me: I used to use “My Wine List” to very quickly browse whether things I’d previously purchased and enjoyed were back in stock. It was color-coded according to whether the wine was in stock or not. They seem to have done away with that completely. In stock, out of stock, all the same color. And only 12 per page. No tidy list. Ugh. What a mess.
I also emailed them some small feedback a few months ago when it started to roll out. No response. It has continued to get worse since.
Couldn’t agree more. I’ve used their website (going back 20+ years) as an example of what a good retail site should be about. And now.. woof.
Sure hasn’t hurt their auction prices
Had all sorts of connectivity issues this morning.
It is sad to see my fav wine store change their online presence in this idiotic way. Most of my purchases are from them and I love their broad selection and the fact that they are half a mile away! Costumer service is not ideal either as I’ve found one staff member outright rude to me and separately my neighbor.
90% of the wine I’ve purchased in the last decade has been from K&L. I’m in SF, and their website/prices/inventory has always been second to none. This new website is killing me. I’ve only made two small purchases in the last few months since they rolled it out. I just don’t have desire to browse the site anymore. C’est la vie.
Oh my god it’s getting even worse! Now the individual wine landing pages don’t even have inventory readily viewable, you have to click on a separate link to even see what’s in stock. WHAT ARE THEY DOING
They are screwing up what was once a pretty cool website to browse. For me, an early change was annoying, but I am pretty OCD - some wines pop up on their site without appearing in the “New Arrivals” feed. If you were interested in, say, new arrivals in Cal Cabs, you could see how many were in stock at any time - so if the number increased, you’d know they’d gotten something new. A few months ago that changed so that if the total number was over 100, it just said 100+. Most updates since then have made the site less pleasant. For instance, the changes to how they display wines you’ve purchased are pretty bad.
I asked the K&L AI chat agent on their site to look at my purchasing history (while I was logged into my account) and recommend other items that might be comparable to prior purchases.
It was unable to do that stating that it could not see what I had bought before.
Just think of all the bragging you can do in the Cellar reduction thread.
My wife is the only person who needs to hear about this
Oh, cool, they finally got around to enshittifying the new product feed: https://shop.klwines.com/products/new-product-feed
If you have 20/2000 vision and were begging to have as little information and as much white space as possible on the screen, you’re in for a treat. But I am also aware of yelling at clouds here - do people like this new interface? If so, it’s not a hill I’ll die on - maybe I’ll learn to love it too.
Nope, not fond of the new look. I used to be able to scan through my filtered results in a few seconds, not any more. Nothing I can find better about any aspect of the site.
But you did remind me to look at it, and find a long time favorite: 2023 Hubert Lamy St. Aubin Remilly. Price: $260. OK, sure. I bought the 2009 of this for $30. 2010 $45, increasing to $65 for the 2016. Then it climbed even higher, beyond what I was willing to pay, and now it’s just stupid for a bottle of St. Aubin, as nice as it is.
