Is it time for a new pronunciation thread?

A couple. I was told that Huet in the Loire pronounces thier name Hugh-ET, as they are a Dutch family originally and so they pronounce the t.

Also, the people I know who know Manfred call it Sin Ekwah Non (said as one word). Not the way you would pronounce the phrase in Latin.

Trotanoy = troht-nuah

At least that’s what a coworker insists on being the correct pronunciation.

How do most of you deal with Rothschild? Actual “child” or “sheeld”?

Shoo-ah-shoo-huh. The “eux” sound is quite rare in English…

Troht-ah-noo-ah.

And the way the French pronounce Rothschild is with the sheeld ending…leave it to the French!

Er, yes. To me, quill and qwill are phonetically the same though so…

Quilceda is actually a placename, usually spelled Quil Ceda or Quil-ceda. Name of a river- well, technically a creek. I think it annoys them that it’s also the name of a casino - http://www.quilcedacreekcasino.com/

My all-time favorite wine term to pronounce: trockenbeerenauslese (TROCK-en-BEHR-en-OWS-lay-zeh)

Txakolina

Being on the east coast and having no wine snob friends to help me out, you read names of wineries and vineyards only to finally hear them and realize you’ve been botching it since day one (hello To-Kalon). One thing you can do is just call the winery. They always answer with the winery name. Then either be polite or just hang up. Haha!

I worked in their tasting room occasionally a long time ago. The #1 question visitors would ask is, “How do you pronounce your name?” I look at them quizzically and answer, “Bob.”

btw, it’s pronouned “gurn-vil” not “gurnee-vil”

The person I know who has the most experience with this vineyard pronounces it TOE-kah-lon. Correct?

Malescot St Exupery?

I have no idea – is it:
MAL scot son ex OO Perr ee

I thought it was “groin-ville”

Cayuse?

Ask your Uncle Hermann. Though I guess you aren’t really related. Too bad. He makes good wines too.

Since “Exupery” begins with a vowel, the t at the end of Saint would be audible. I also pronounce the e in Malescot but not the t at the end.

kye-yoose

first syllable rhymes with ‘eye’

Mal e sco saint ex U(with umlaut) per ee

Note sure about its accuracy on some of them.

Raymond Luxury Yacht?

Not related, different spelling. But if I ever get to the Finger Lakes, I would like to visit him.
