Is Bedrock the new Carlisle? (new mailers and such)

OK, just got home after work and have picked up my Bedrock order. Morgan, thanks for meeting me. Was nice to meet you.

In front of me I have the following:
08 Lorenzo’s Heirloom
08 Bedrock Heirloom
08 Kick Ranch Syrah
09 Ode to Lulu

Which one would you pop first knowing what each is like? Hmmm? It’s a cool evening, around 63º and breezy, so I think the Lulu will have to wait. Have to wait a week for the Lakeville Syrah to come in. Dang.

Brian,

Open the Bedrock Heirloom and be sure to let us know your thoughts.

Pop and pour. Dark purple like petite sirah and a little cloudy. Big fruit, minerals and some alcohol on the nose but with an earthy CdP kind of nose that I really enjoyed. Big flavor but not dense or overpowering or overly acidic, nice spice and no heat. Needs to open up a little more. Great tannins on the finish that last and last. Going to give this another hour to breath. Really tasty juice.

Brian,
Lovely wine, that one. Only gets better with some air.

BTW, I just checked what’s still for sale (in the hope that I could in early for tomorrrows offering). It looks like only the two syrahs and the PN are left from the spring mailer.

Yer still a putz. If you ever make anything close to the quality of Vino Bambino I’ll eat my hat…

You aren’t kidding. This thing is exploding in my mouth. Yum.

Boy, glad I got in when I did. Thanks Berzerkers for a great find. And the mailer goes out tomorrow. What timing! I told Morgan today when he said the mailer was going out that I was sorry but I blew my wad today (no crude references to the above note please). I may have to rethink that thought now. Just got my offer. In the midst of trying to be more thoughtful about my spend, have any of you tried the Hudson syrahs yet? The co-ferment is what I am interested in, but the 100% new wood is what I am hesitating about. Anyone tried it?

Aaaaaand another 200 bucks. HAH! This board sucks.

I did sample this wine (out of bottle) a few weeks ago, but sadly I didn’t take copious notes. I can tell you that I didn’t notice an over abundance of oak. While all 3 of the syrahs were delicious, this one ranked second for me (with the whole cluster coming out on top). Admittedly I’m not typically a huge fan of co-fermenting viognier with syrah, as I prefer the “straight-up” syrah characteristics. But this version, with only 5% viognier, maintained much of the burly syrah qualities with the viognier just polishing off a few of the rougher edges.

Very generous allocations this time.
I took 4 Caritas, and 4 each of the three zins.

in for 18 bottles of zin and syrah.
where am i going to hide them from the wife?

Okay, one of you Francophiles out there, please interpret for me. Morgan compares the 3 zins in this release to French wines (not zin) as follows. I know I really liked the Stellwagen when I tasted it. But please put these in perspective/sequence for me (biggest boldest:softest lightest) vis-a-vis the French comps:

Sonoma Old Vine=Fortia
Stellwagen=Mordoree
O, Brother=Rayas

Based on this thread…and a brief email exchange with Morgan about the wines…I signed up for the list, got my allocation and broke my “no spending” promise again. I’m in for a mixed case including some Caritas which Morgan made sound so good that I added it at the last minute.

BTW, I am also a long term member of Biale’s list and still love their wines, but have been buying less the last couple of years due to price creep and the highest shipping charges (per bottle) that I’ve seen for Zins/Syrahs. A case order is shipped for free, but less than a case is something like $5-$7 per bottle. I was pleased to see that Morgan’s shipping to L.A. is free (at least at the 10 and 12 bottle order level). Another victim here. Just bought a mixed sixer. [berserker.gif]

Waited on pulling the trigger on the last release. Jumped in head first with this one with a mixed case.

Hey Chad-- Sorry, I was being rather oblique with this reference, and I am sure that many CDP lovers will argue with my encapsulation of these houses but here goes.

Fortia-- classic, old-school, house producing very good, perfumed, wines that are always solid and always a good price.

Mordoree-- Big, rich, more extracted, more new oak (though they have tamed it a bit in the Reine du Bois bottling in recent years).

Rayas-- Perfumed, elegant, structured, perhaps a trace lighter on its feet that some.

Sure I just got myself in a bunch of trouble with those definitions but hey, wine is an individual experience, right?

Happy to support a winery that is doing its part in saving old vine zinfandel vineyards, and has a philosophy I really appreciate.

Definitely, and it doesn’t hurt when the wines are good on top of that.

I am looking forward to trying the Hudson Vineyard Whole Cluster Syrah against the “Pleine de Chene”. Interesting experiment.
Morgan - How many vineyards do you think can manage for sourcing fruit before it could get overwhleming Or is that all just part of the fun?
T.

In for a bunch and picked up a few more from the last release locally tonight. Nothing gets my interest more these days than a producer doing something unique and these wines seem to have a unique style to them. Love the fact they are working to preserve old vines and keep prices in range for more frequent drinking.
