I saw a photo of a Ceritas tasting where they poured into Zalto Universals. I have to love that. I use them as my every day glass, but with the number of stems I use here, I am not likely to replace all my Riedel/Spiegelaus any time soon. Maybe. Probably. Right now I am bringing out one Zalto stem at the end of a multi-vintage tasting, and experiencing one vintage side by side, Riedel and Zalto. Hey, I get bored easily.
You inspired me…I put away that boring XXX Pinot and pulled a 2005 Black Cat, myself. It is too cool from the cellar, but I removed the cork, removed that pesky stuff being deposited in every 2005 EMH Black Cat bottle neck, and decanted. Poured a small glass into one Zalto Universal, and one into a Riedel. I put them to warm before the fire burning in the living room (do not attempt to do this at home ).
I was surprised by the sediment in the neck, especially when I didn’t see any when I decanted the rest of it. It has been open now since about 5pm, it is now 9. Very, very nice. Still has years to go I think.
Has anyone done a head to head with a Zalto universal and Spiegelau universal? They look very similar in pictures but the Spiegelau are a lot less expensive.
Oui. They are at $100 now, based on supply and demand. Still in the warehouse where they moved after bottling in 2007.
Zalto is blowing the doors off the Riedel. As a producer, however, I wonder if it is “fair” to present wines in the Zalto - that is the best they will ever show, and few buyers will have them. I am thinking about this…
In at least one buyer’s opinion, anything anyone can do to let me taste wine at its best is appreciated. Granted I’m likely biased by regularly drinking from Zalto.
A Zalto from most retailers is no more than a bottle of Black Cat. No, it’s not an inexpensive glass. But given that the price of one glass that will make me enjoy numerous wines at their best is less than any of those bottles, it’s a no brainer. More than fair IMO.
Thank you for your comments , truly. My dilemma is that I do not want people to taste with me, experience a wine, purchase it, open it at home, only to find it does not taste like it did when it was shown.
That is a little over my usual budget. But it was great while it lasted.
I find that a lot of times. The experience of being at a tasting can make the wine more enjoyable. There have been times that we have opened the wines a few months later and thought “what the heck were we thinking”. And there have been times when we opened them and thought “we should have a whole case”. The glass can make a difference but that is a risk everyone takes.
