How many bottles in your cellar? (new poll)

1800+ stuffed into every cranny in my cellar

Be careful lining these up next to each other. I have three slightly older models. All operated great until l moved them and lined them up next to each other. Now the middle unit does not cool as good as it stays in the mid to high 60’s. (Daily drinkers go in this one.)

I have none lined up as of yet - interesting issue you have, however…have you amended placement at all, to test if leaving space between them solves the issue?

Standard today for most refrig or freezer they use the outer shell of the unit to dissipate condenser heat. most will withstand covering up one side but when you cover both sides there isn’t enough heat dissipated for the condenser. Adding space between them will help. If possible at least 6".

No f’ing clue, and I like it that way

I have a rough idea only because my cellar is busting full but the organizational setup is random chaos. Every visit is an adventure.

I compare my wine habit to an old man and sex. I talk about it a lot but don’t do it very often.

When did you start? I’ve been at this for a long time and cellaring in earnest for about 15 years, and have about as many bottles as you. I keep about 100 in my apartment and the rest are in offsite professional storage.

At around 550 currently. The initial goal was 300-350, which realistically meant about 400. So anything under 600 should be considered a win. I still think I’m 1-2 years away from the “for every bottle that goes in, something must come out” threshold. But I’ve also though that for the last couple of years.

I still can’t get over the fact that 56% polled have 1000 bottles or less. Cmon people, what’s wrong with you.

I have less than 1000 bottles. I don’t count the other 600 because than I don’t feel like I have a buying problem.

I have collected for about seven years. I also have 500 offsite (my max) and the rest at home.

I clearly just need to drink more and buy smarter

Yeap, that’s the issue. I have about 3 inches between them (space constraint). Although when you increase the spacing it does not look as nice.

I think I have had Beserker disease for 50 years!

I guess that most of us live in or within a 5 mile (maybe 10 mile) radius of the downtown of one of the 15 largest urban areas in the US and are below the age of 50.

I don’t. Now we need a new poll.

Currently have 948 in the cellar with 31 pending. The cellar was originally built to hold 400 bottles. I added some racks, but it is getting crowded.

I never thought about it this way, but its a good way of thinking about that look they get. My other favorite, other than the “whats the most expensive bottle you have?” that others have mentioned is “I just drink my wine too quickly to have a collection”

I am surprised that majority that voted have only up to 1k bottles. I was expecting to see 1500 easy.

I have no easy way of counting. A good estimate is slightly under 3000. About 40% is burgundy. Another 35% is Bordeaux. The nominal replacement value (also an extremely rough estimate) has become obscene. A lot of my favorites in the cellar are now “well, this is the last time I’ll taste this” ….

I just walked away from Bordeaux after the 2000 vintage because of prices and started loading up on burg. So I avoided a lot (not all) of the spoofy 2000-2010ish clarets. And burgundy at the time was relative value. Once again, I made out not because I am smart but just through idiot luck. It’s not like I knew any better. Came back to bordeaux for 2016 (exception, and again blind luck, 2015 Ch Margaux not even knowing it was Pontallier’s last) and loaded up on a relatively small amount of 2016, more 2018, and a small lake of 2019 and 2020. Burgundy purchases have really started to drop: I ponied up for some 2018, less 2019 and a lot less 2020 just because the prices are absurd.

An increasing number of purchases are now DTC from US producers - BerserkerDay is now the main cause of my wife’s shaking her head at me.
