I was supposed to go last July but Covid hit me. Going this July. This is the thread I got ideas from. Might want to continue asking in that thread - easier when there aren’t a lot of threads per city.
I used to go to Montreal every summer for 2-3 nights but haven’t been since covid. All I’ll say is I’ve eaten everywhere in town and the only restaurants that ever really knocked me over were Joe beef’s places and places from their ex chefs.
I’d go to Mon lapin next time I’m back more than any other place. I actually prefer dinner on the terrace at vin papillon than Joe beef but both are great. Think vin papillon for vegetables and seafood and small plates where Joe beef is a gut bomb of an excess Montreal steakhouse. I believe I went to Joe beef as early as 2005.
Drinks on the terrace at hotel nelligan is a nice treat when the weather cooperates.

Mon Lapin - hands down one of the best restaurants I have eaten in.
Is l’express still good?
I enjoyed this as well, poles apart from Mon Lapin, but the quality and service were amazing.

Can’t get into Mon Lapin before 9pm - I might drop Joe Beef if I can get in to Mon Lapin due to the heaviness of the food at JB.
Would folks recommend L’express over any of the ones listed? (never mind, closed until end of July).
We will be there in September so too far out for some rezzies. I will update this if I get lucky.

Mon Lapin or Joe Beef?
It be an easier choice if Mon Lapin res wasn’t at 9:30.
St Viateur or Fairmont Bagel seems to be the two favs. I went to Fairmont a few years ago, both are in Mile End. Would have gone last year but not convenient.

Vin Papillon is the casual bistro owned by Joe Beef and highly recommended.
I would suggest trying Montreal smoked meat. I enjoyed the sandwiches at Dunn’s.
We eat Montreal smoked meats but a pace downtown. We should have gone to Dunn’s I saw Vin Papillon but it may have been closed in august when we were in Montreal.
I bring back a few dozen from St. Viateur every trip. Make sure to request right out of the oven.
MTL Bagel in CSL is also very good.
And for smoked meat, suggest Snowdon Deli over Dunns.
I still think it’s very good, but closed for the Spring and Summer. Was there last year and enjoyed it fine.
We have dinner reservations here for our Anniversary! (this Sunday, June 29th). Looking forward to it! Never been!

One of my patients recently was telling me they snow bird between SC and Montreal, and their favorite thing the whole year in Montreal is the Jazz fest. Is that still happening in September?
