German Spatburgunder Master Thread

As you probably know, I introduced Enderle & Moll to the American market. Dan Melia was my colleague at Mosel Wine Merchant. I never talked to them about it either.

Yes, sometime ago it struck me how much of your work paved the way for many of the wines so many of us came to know of and cherish.

Thanks for the kind words.

We had the E&M Rose 2023 this evening in Pittsburgh at Fet Fisk (“scandanvian” themed resto. Had to break the news to our server that this was it for E&M. Kudos to Lars (and Lyle) for spreading the word.

By coincidence drinking an Enderle & Moll 2022 Spätburgunder Rosé tonight. Maybe not the top E&M wine, but the epitome of the light earthy and crunchy style.

I shared a magnum of Enderle & Moll’s 2007 Buntsandstein with friends in 2022. It was the first wine from them that I offered in the States.

A slight change of direction…

I will be staying in the Rastatt-Baden Baden area for a week or so in two months. If you were going to recommend three or four Spatburgunder producers to visit not too far from there, what would they be?

FYI, I followed Spatburgunder for a while 20 years ago after several visits to Germany, but lost interest after tasting too many overoaked and, in some cases overripe, wines. (Also, the choices were very limited back here in the US, and often quite expensive.) I gather that there are fewer of those bigger oaky wines today. I’d definitely prefer to visit winemakers who are making wines that don’t try too hard to be facile.

Baden is a big place. That looks to be far from the wine area although I could be wrong. Here are some Baden producers I would recommend:

Ziereisen
Wasenhaus
Bernhard Huber
Salwey

Some smaller up and comers:

La Boussole
Makalie
David and Charlotte Beck

Thanks. It’s not that far. I went to Bernhard Huber many years ago, and that’s about an hour from where I’ll be staying. (In addition to good wines, they had a wonderful blackcurrant vinegar that I’d love to get more of!)

Anyone else have suggestions?

Franz Keller is another Spätburgunder producer to visit. If you want to go out for dinner, I can highly recommend Winzerhaus Rebstock or, even better, Schwarzer Adler in Vogtsburg-Oberbergen.

Thanks, Lars! That would be easy to combine with a return to B Huber.

My pleasure, John! Both restaurants have an amazing wine list, including Baden Spätburgunders from other producers. On a trip to Südtirol last autumn, a friend and I ate at Winzerhaus Rebstock and shared a bottle of 2023 Kalk from Wasenhaus.

Other producers include Aufricht, Dr. Heger, Martin Waßmer, and Fritz Waßmer.

We are visiting Jonas mid-March, so I will make sure to ask (and take some pictures to put here!).

Rastatt is close to Stuttgart. You could also visit top producers in Württemberg, such as Rainer Schnaitmann, Aldinger, Dautel, Karl Haidle, Roterfaden, Lassak, and Beurer.

Except some already mentioned but not in Baden, yet reasonably close to where you will stay, Frederich Becker.

Looking at my google map bookmarks I added Weingut Andreas Laible, I believe it was Sarah who liked their wines but cannot recall if she specifically mentioned their Spätburgunders though.

Being from Rastatt I HAVE to chime in. The closest producer of interesting Spätburgunder is Kopp. Many good and excellent producers are already named in the thread. It you are interested in a good wineshop where you can get the Pinots mentioned I recommend Drexler in Freiburg. They have the big names and the small producers in their Portfolio. (Huber, Keller, Salwey, Heger, and so on but also Wasenhaus and Makalie or a favorite of mine Heinkele). Andreas Laible is known for Riesling. Feel free to reach out of you need more Information. I live in Freiburg.

In Schweigen-Rechtenbach, I’d also recommend Jülg.
