Shoot I can’t remember! I think it was 21. It is a yearly case by for me.
From 2017, just found in the archives. None of the new hip names back then; nevertheless Germany did very well, particularly Juelg.
Well it’s true. This is some good stuff!
Way too young and very reductive right now, but after a two hour decant it starts singing and shows its big potential. The oak is so well integrated that I don’t mind it. Might buy even more for the cellar now, as I think they will age with beauty.
It’s under Diam10 by the way.
So happy you liked it! I was really impressed.
Jülg is killing it recently and not just their Chardonnay. I tasted their Weißburgunder Rechtenbacher Pfarrwingert 2022 not long ago and it is really well done. Pinot Blanc can be difficult with oak and they just nailed it.
It is really rare to find good Gutedel. There is a reason why you don’t see it outside of Baden and Switzerland - heck you don’t even see it outside of the outermost South of Baden. It is just boring. That said, if you can find Max Greiner Gutedel from 2022 - grab it! He is making waves here in the region because it is so good.
It just hit the same “nerve” as so much of my beloved Jura.
I can buy it from Germany for 40€. I would be hard pressed to find a wine that fits my taste better at that price point. So I might just fill my cellar with it while prices are in that range. I made plenty mistakes of not buying enough of my favourite Jura before prices went south…
I cannot comment on those but every single Chardonnay and Pinot from Juelg I ever had was fine.
Boring describes it. Also the Gonon version is nothing special.
Ziereisen Gutedel 10^4 (costs 125 eur !) is supposed to be another level. I have one or two somewhere, they are still waiting their turn.
I actually never tried it. I know some people who did and they say, that it is just a differnet thing. There is nothing Gutedel about it but tries to be a great white wine in a Burgundian style. It is just an odd outlier in a sea of mediocre Gutedel. I think 95% of the world production of Gutedel is consumed at a Tuesday evening together with a ham sandwich.
So please report back if you open one, I’m very curious!
Not boring but not sure what to think of it. I opened a 2016 back in 2019. I have another one that will sit for two or three years to see if a little age will give me some clarity on it.
WongAmat/WongSiri Chardonnay 2022
A true rarity, only 200 something bottles made.
Day 1
A winning nose: apples, limes, smoke. On the palate more apples, white nectarines, popcorn, some spice. Medium acidity. Smooth, charming, with a creamy texture. Not so different from a recent Matrot. Not necessarily distinctive, feels a bit generic. But in a good way, just a fine bottle of Chardonnay made in an opulent style.
Day 2
Completely transformed. The mineral core emerges shedding off the buttery layers. A pleasant bittery note, with a very long spicy finish. With a bit more acidity could easily pass as a Riesling from the Pfalz. Or for those Languedoc blends with Marsanne.
Day 3
Who knows, the decanter is empty.
Fascinating, puzzling wine (or two).
Sounds intriguing. I can’t remember if I bought any!
Holy WOW Batman! This wine was insanely great! Just a stunning wine that was nearly perfect with every single thing I love about Chardonnay. I wish I would have kept a little to try today but it was so good it disappeared very quickly.
gotta say the quality of that cork looks pretty weak for an $80 bottle…
What a lovely thread - thank you. It has inspired me to go and pick up a few bottles, which I can’t wait to try.
Wonderful. Please report back.
Reporting back from a short trip to St Kitts I made 2 weekends ago. I took some wine with me, including these:
No formal notes and from memory
2022 Moritz Kissinger Ohm (This is a Chardonnay/Weissburgunder blend)
Judging the wine by the label I thought that I was bringing some ultra-fun to drink at the beach glou-glou style kind of wine. Well, I was right and wrong at the same time as this is something really serious and ultra-fun wine at the same time. I became an instant fan of Kissinger so I bought more of this and also their Chardonnay.
2021 Seckinger R Chardonnay Pure
I can see the similarities between German Chardonnay and Jura. Although I think that this wine is still very young and it’ll gain weight and complexity with age, it was a perfect complement to the seafood paella, as its sharp acidity cut it through that dish as a razor blade. No need to squish a lemon over the paella with this wine pairing.
Thanks for the awesome notes! We will be doing a Seckinger offer soon for the more serious Chards.
