German Chardonnay - The Next Frontier!

I do think the Null Ohm is made as a fun early drinking wine, hence the name. But a good friend of mine who bought a lot of bottles (2020 maybe) tells me that they are surprisingly aging very well.

I went for 2x:

  • 2021 Knewitz Chardonnay Reserve
  • 2020 SchĂ€fer-Fröhlich Chardonnay R
  • 2022 JĂŒlg Opus Oskar
  • 2020 Ziereisen Jaspis NĂ€gelin
  • 2019 FĂŒrst Chardonnay R (1bt)

It’ll be a little while before I can taste them but I look forward to them very much. I already enjoy Swiss Chardonnay hugely but I imagine the German accent will be different :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks again to this thread for encouraging me to try my luck off Riesling path a bit.

A pair (that I sell) from Peter Wagner

The Sekt light and creamy, refined after two years on lees. Has some Pinot Blanc IIRC

The Chardonnay is tight, a creamy hint, firm acids, yellow fruits. Long.

I actually had a bottle of Renard’s Chardonnay @ Die Mosel on my recent trip to Germany and I must admit I wasn’t impressed. I’ve previously had his Riesling which was profound, but the Chardonnay fell flat. No length. No concentration. No reduction. Nothing. Just a friendly natural wine. Friends in my company agreed, it wasn’t special, especially given the high price tag compared to other bottles we had that night which reigned superior. Later on, a vintner comrade who tasted the Renard assured us that something was off
that he had drank the exact vintage several times before and it usually displays magic but this wasn’t it. He was convinced the bottle was off.

Bummer!

It’s been a good while since I went to this shop but last time I saw Wasenhaus cases stacked up next to a hot heater (in winter). When I pointed it out they were quite relaxed and dismissive about it. Good luck!

2015 Knewitz Chardonnay Reserve trocken

That’s how it all started. A few days later by coincidence I met the Chardonnay and the winemaker Tobias Knewitz at a summer event chez the estate JĂŒlg in Schweigen. I was deeply (!) impressed by this Chad and the rest is history. Maybe the best-selling german Chardonnay in 2017 and 2018?!

What a Meursault perfume. Such clear, mineral (!) and salty on the palate. Still some reductive notes. No fat whatsoever „kein Gramm Fett“. Very shy fruit, some little nutty notes, but for me more important such fresh, tight and cool. AND quite good selection of oak by Tobias. Anyway how terrific and a milestone for Chardonnay in Germany.

BTW, this Chad passed the time-test easily. Also confirmed by a big&blind international Chardonnay-Tasting by the wine-journalist Christoph Raffelt in 2022, in which the 2015 Knewitz-Chardonnay was the clear winner.

I think I am well known on the board as being a humongous fan of the Wasenhaus wines. I tried their 2022 Chardonnay for the first time a couple weeks ago and was absolutely blown away. Drinks like high-quality Chablis with a hint of Jura in the mix. Perhaps a little natty edge but drinks very clean and classic, just with a little lift and intrigue.

Raumland - Chardonnay Reserve 2014 (deg. 03.2023)

Fine and long lasting perlage. Ripe apple, pastry notes, almond, citrus, herbs, hay flowers, mineralic. Fresh and salty, full body, balanced and long lasting. Good example of quality sparkling wine needing time on the bottle after degorgement. First bottle six months ago did not sing like this. Good potential, give this air or time.

I know this is not a Chardy, but as a producer pushing it I thought it worth a mention.
For after dinner time tonight without the wife I went to a wine place here in Seoul and hoped for something good open. Jackpot. Both a Julien Renard Chardonnay and the Saalwachter was open. Tried both and found the Renard to be a little tight and sharp rather than deep, so I ended up with the Saalwachter Weiss Burgunder. Wow. Will order a few of the step-up cuvees to try I think.

While the notes on Chard are an order of magnitude below the notes on German Riesling, those have declined the last two years.

There was a sadly neglected bottle of that '22 Chard in my friend’s wine shop. Was.

Just grabbed some 22 Wasenhaus Hohlen today after loving it at the Wasenhaus dinner two weeks ago

Looks like I need to get back on Riesling!

What does the trend for German Pinot Noir / SpÀtburgunder look like?

Funny you should I ask. I ran that too. Not as dramatic, but still directionally same. Might as well post it here .

2017 1727
2018 1912
2019 2034
2020 2408
2021 2609
2022 2544
2023 2984
2024 3011

Silvaner was also slightly down vs 2023.

And before you ask, Elbling held pretty constant.

Rudolf FĂŒrst’s 2022 Chardonnay »R«, made from 20-year-old vines in Astheimer KarthĂ€user, bordering Escherndorfer Lump, is considered one of the top examples in Germany, but I have not tasted it.

Please cross-post this data in the German spÀtburgunder thread. For posterity!

I have tasted the FĂŒrst BĂŒrgstadter Berg 2022 Chardonnay some months ago at a Weinfurore tasting and quite liked it. Based on that I picked up 1 bottle of the “R” Chardonnay, pity it is so expensive (as nearly all top German Chardonnays are by now). IÂŽll report back in a few years :stuck_out_tongue: What about an electric Falkenstein Chardonnay Lars? I had your 2023 Pinot Blanc Pet Nat recently and IÂŽd say the knife on the label has all its reasons to be on there
