Best bread in town. And do not pass on a bottle of their fermented chili sauce.
What vintage is it? Iāve read that from the 2022 vintage they started adding a bit of sulfites to better control the wine (10mg/l). Maybe they re-branded it?
Itās 2021, it could be that itās been rebranded, but I also think, as Rober mentioned, that they are making custom labels for the US market.
The 2022 Chardonnay Pure from Seckinger was also drinking very well on day two. No faults in sight despite its low amount of SO2.
A big bonus is that my wife liked it a lot too.
My post about my visit to Seckinger is up.
Before my post I decided to bring one of the Grand Cru level Chardonnays I hand carried back to Foxface to ācheckā my enthusiasm. Holy WOW! It was even more stunning than I remembered. It has just a touch of oak. As someone who hates oak I donāt mind a little with Chardonnay and this was just perfect. It had great acidity that you can only get in Germany. It comes from a limestone soil so it is also very Burgundian. And with the food just magical!!!
I grabbed that chili sauce at their grocery store yday. Perfect on my eggs this morning. Thanks for the 411.
Glad you like it! Eggs is my favorite application for it.
Glad to hear the oak on the Kapellenberg is well balanced as I took a gamble and ordered another six of them along with more Chardonnay and Savagnin Pure
Will taste the Kapellenberg in two weeks time together with some friends.
If you donāt like them I would happily take them off your hands
I know I will as a minimum like them with some age probably. It is the same issue I have with a lot of young white Burgundy. The early oak notes can be a bit too much for me, but with a few years of age I like them better
You certainly are in on the ground floor of German Chardonnay!
Just for fun, I was curious if I could find evidence that this thread stimulated purchases of German Chardonnay. Sorry, @Robert_Dentice - no.
In CellarTracker, purchases of German Chardonnay was up year over year 2024 vs 2023 (to date of 9/9 in both cases) pretty much the same as overall trend. And the purchases in 1-9 Sept 2024 were identical to (randomly picked) 1-9 May 2024.
Come on, people! Step it up.
It is because I donāt log my wines in CellarTracker
Well I did notice last weekend when Chambers did a big sale on new arrival wines and the only one that sold out quickly was a Holger Koch Chardonnay! 12 bottles. I did buy three of them : )
And lets revisit this in a year from now!
Anyone familiar with Bietighƶfer (Pfalz) Chardonnay?
I also see a Kissinger in the background!
Yes! This is part of my recent all-German purchase, including the pictured '21 Seckinger, '22 Kissinger Ohm, '22 Wasenhaus Gutedel, '22 Stein Red Light and '23 Stein RosƩ.
That is a cool group of wines leaning towards the natural end of the spectrum.
I love the Stein Red light with a little chill. I have yet to try the Rose but canāt imagine it is not great in 2023.
I have never been a huge fan of the Wasenhaus Gutedel, I just donāt like the grape. I found a 2016 in the cellar and assumed it would be shot as it is a low SO2 early drinking wine. To my surprise it was the best one by a long shot.
Please report back!
Itāll be my first time trying a Gutedel / Chasselas so I donāt even know if I like the variety either . Iāll report back soon. As a curiosity, Ilka mentioned that you took a Stein RosĆ© to Helsinki and made a good impression on them, what vintage was that?
