Eating and Drinking in New York City

Went to 53 and ate at the bar. What beautiful, cozy space for winter! Food is great (Lux PF Changs). An expense account kind of place. $75 corkage.

Great description. I went for a business lunch and enjoyed it. It is huge. Was surprised at how big the wine list was.

Ah only seeing now there is a downstairs! Thought it was just upstairs… oops

Strikes me as a better place for dinner than lunch for the nighttime vibe

There’s a place in my suburb that seems to want to be 4 Charles. Menu prices are nearly the same despite being in a boring building that used to be a Vet’s office in the burbs. Sorry but I’m not paying $90 for filet mignon in the same room where Fluffy the Poodle got put down!

Glad to see this got some praise.
I went there last weekend - wonderful pintxos and excellent service. Waitstaff brought over a few extra plates just because they thought we should try them.
Really loved the Gildas - so simple and delicious.

Totally agree. Completely inappropriate reflection of terroir. Fluffy only made it into the local food truck’s kebabs.

Had lunch at Via Carota the other day. A friend had a reservation and so we went. I didn’t realize the amount of hype the restaurant has or how difficult it is to secure a reservation. It was very good and I definitely enjoyed myself. It’s a wonderful room and the service was great. If I had a chance to return I would happily do so. Would I kill myself for a reservation? Not a chance. There is far too much good Italian food in NYC to have to deal with that nonsense.

Also nonsense? The corkage is $100.

I’m thinking of going to either Pasquale Jones or Charlie Bird next week. Two questions:

Is one more conducive to conversation/less loud than the other?

Which has a more reasonably priced wine list?

Thanks.

4 Charles is one of those places were people of certain type go because it is so exclusive. It is only 10 tables. 40-50% are held for standing regulars reservations similar to Raos. It is what it is. I will say the food is very good and hospitality off the charts for such an exclusive spot. I look forward to going back.

Interesting. I walk by it constantly and always wonder. Your description almost sounds like China Grill (for those who remember).

Very similar to China grill except with a better (albeit very high priced) wine list.

Yes! It is a hazy memory, but yes!

Anyone going to the Riesling tasting at pave today? I have a ticket for the afternoon session that I can’t use.

I am a big fan of Charlie Bird. I don’t think of it as extremely loud but feels good when buzzing. Wine list is relatively well priced. I had a PYCM Bourgogne aligote for $120 or something like that which I enjoyed.

Charlie Bird is also on inKind.

I didn’t find noise to be an issue at Pasquale Jones and I’m quite intolerant of high noise level in restaurants.
The only time I went to Charlie Bird, we sat at one of the outdoor table right by 6th Avenue, and having quite subdued conversation was also not a problem.

Need to do an earlier informal dinner Thursday in/near W 50th. Suggestions?

It is tough out there. Not many Chef and GM combos better than Ray and Sam. Cactus Wren is closing.

How informal? Been a long while but I remember getting decent Thai on the rare occasion I found myself near and needing food. I recently heard BKK is good.

Had a fun meal here.

It is from the Golden Diner team.

They have a corkage policy. I ordered a Selbach riesling that overdelivered.
