Eating and Drinking in New York City

Had a fun meal here.

It is from the Golden Diner team.

They have a corkage policy. I ordered a Selbach riesling that overdelivered.

Thanks for the feedback on Pasquale Jones and Charlie Bird.

Looking for recommendations on wines under $200 from the PJ wine list: http://bw-winelist-website-prod.s3-website-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/d9b61845-a669-437d-bb6c-c74c67a5152a-prod/#/d14afc5a-ae17-4241-bcc6-dc49706a15d7/2#White%20Burgundy-header1

Much appreciated.

I enjoyed BKK. food and drinks were good. Nice change of atmosphere for midtown…

LumLum also very good thai in the area

love Golden Diner but GoldenHOF had mixed reviews when a looked a little ways back (pretty new so may just be ironing it out) but glad to hear a first hand positive review

In addition to the previously mentioned options (all good), Chalong, Pure Thai, and Lum Lum for Thai. New Raku location between 51&52. Aldo Sohm Wine Bar and Ardesia for, well, wine bars with good food. More midtown, but Modern Bar Room and the Rock Center spots (Jupiter, Naro, Lodi) are decent choices. Jaz on 9th also good Indian.

Going here. Thanks, Mark.

Robert, you reminded me that I attended a great Oregon byob here (@Sam_Kwak organized and knows the team well). We had a great time and they were super accommodating to large and boisterous group.

Any cool new places to visit in NYC (especially for a dinner for two?)

I’ve liked Jua, Semma, Claude, Four Horsemen, and Torrisi in my last couple of visits. Looking for a similar type of place (under $200 per person – though Jua may no longer be that anymore), cool place with good ambiance, place where I can catch up with a friend, really good food. Not particularly picky about type of food as long as it is well executed. Wine list doesn’t matter.

Big fan of Claud’s sister restaurant, Penny. Also, I Cavallini from the 4HM crew.

Bridges, Kabawa or Smithereens would fit this bill. Bridges just got a Michelin star so it might be harder to get in. For a light meal I really like LEI Wine Bar. Sunnys would also be another great option.

We just came back from a few days in NYC. We stayed at 60LES and were very close to Russ & Daughter and Katz’s. Both were great. Our best dinner was at Beauty and Essex. All I knew was they had a great menu, great reviews and were close to our hotel. Dinner was outstanding. The Beef Wellington was perfect and the sauce was exceptional. The fried eggplant made all 4 of us say WOW. The Black Forest cake was a delicious variation of the classic. The room and the service were both beyond expectations. Highly recommended.

That is a real shocker. Never thought of it as a place to go for food. It was more of a scene type place.

that’s funny robert i thought the same thing, but i checked out the menu and i have to say it sounds kind of fun
it is a tao group place and looks it, but seems to have its niche down

Hey guys, going to NYC for my 40th in January. Will have 3 dinners: Le Bernadin, Ai Firoli however I am struggling with the last restaurant. We prefer A la carte menus and was thinking about Le Pavillon (however don’t like the current menu), otherwise Cafe Boulud , Le Coucou. Would love to have some insights from the group on this one. Thanks!

We loved a recent dinner at Le Coucou. Quenelles, Rabbit, Lobster, Dover Sole all really good. Wine prices are shockingly high. I forget what I paid for corkage…maybe $100.

Assuming they still do it, Pasquale Jones does half-priced bottles of grower champagne on Sundays. Great deal and pretty solid champagne selection.

Happy birthday. Those meals (Le Bernadin, Cafe Boulud, Le Coucou, Le Pavillion) all fall into a similar category for me. French…formal…lotta midtown. I know Le Coucou isn’t midtown. I’ve never heard of Au Firoli. Do you mean Ai Fiori? If so, I kinda stick that in the same midtown, formal category.

If you want to stick to Manhattan, I’d throw in Claud. Great food, younger crowd, very serious wine list. I absolutely love it’s sister restaurant, Penny, but I think you have the fish thing covered with Le Bernadin.

I’m not well versed in the far east spots that people love, but that would certainly be different and fun…Atoboy/Atomix, Jungsik, etc. Don’t know enough about those places (others here clearly do) and several of them will be tasting menu style.

Thanks, we are staying in sort of midtown (Omni) so these are reasonably close and also fit our likes in terms of restaurants and have a decent wine list. We looked at Le Coucou however SO did not like the menu. Yes I meant Ai Fiori.

thanks will check out Claud. Not sure if Daniel is worth it , I know they got downgraded from a 2* to a 1*

I’d go Claud over Daniel. But Daniel is a stalwart.

Have a feeling the SO will prefer Daniel’s menu , not sure if anyone has been there recently , not sure why they got downgraded

Where are you from? Do you get to NYC often? Getting around outside of midtown is super easy. I get the idea of walking to and from dinner though.

There is zero chance I choose Daniel over Claud. My gut feeling is that you would be the youngest person in the restaurant at Daniel. I feel like Daniel was tired 20 years ago. Daniel (and all the places you’re looking at) will be much more formal settings than Claud.
