It is definitely a dream! When I talked to Justin about it a few years ago he was not into it. Having said that he has never been to one of my big ones. The LA one I did is still one of my favorites…I hope Wine and Hip Hop tops my musical programming!
Let’s see if this works:

Thank you so much!
Anajak uses my glassware… We could definitely recruit Ian and have the three of us try and convince Justin to do a Study there. Things have changed a lot for them since you asked a few years ago… I honestly think he’d be way more interested now!
TY! I see the vin. What’s the hip hop?
Armand de Brignac is a sponsor (seriously), so them + Charlie Fu busting moves while he slings caviar?
(Unrelated, I will actually give credit to LMVH/Bernard Arnaud’s company as a sponsor - he/they hired Pharrell Williams as head designer of Louis Vuitton Homme, and he has been so wildly successful, he just bought an $80M home in downtown Paris.). (The dude also puts on the most awesome HC shows I’ve ever heard of.)
.
Fu shizzle.
I should actually talk with Jeremy. There are some mind-blowing locations in Paris that would be perfect for a real vin et Hip Hop, and the Parisians (& Americans) would go wild for them - they’d would sell out in a heart beat. (As long as they do real Vin et Hip Hop pricing & not stupid American pricing. Parisians are not fools/they are not in need of/don’t operate by American-style consumption status). There are so many cool Parisian events, and the Parisians go completely wild for therm.
Any suggestions for dinner near The Grove? Was leaning Republique but open to new ideas.
Just down the street, a new place, The Niight We Met. Angelini Osteria close by too.
New place in Koreatown, Lapaba, which is short for LA Pasta Bar. In terms of design, the Nancy Silverton attached space feels like a modern take on a diner. Chef/owner is Korean, is doing a smash up of Italian-Korean, though I would say it’s about 90% Italian and 10% Korean. There’s kimchi suppli and galbi jjim pasta. Gochugaru and bulgogi are also on the menu. Our caesar salad was ok, but not a hint of the listed doenjang. In any case, the food is tasty, with portions size on the small side, but priced accordingly. The corkage policy at $50 is unfriendly and not commensurate with the stem selection, menu pricing or wine list (very limited). Hope the management reconsiders this (I made suggestions to the floor manager). The Korean/Italian confluence is a cool concept. Hopefully the K side will emerge with more authority. As with most places in K-town, parking sucks, but they have valet.
Ashley and I tried Bar Becky last week, located at LBX in Long Beach.
We ordered the following (please excuse the horrible photos – we were hungry, and I wasn’t trying too hard with the pics)
.
Hamachi crudo – we loved the preparation on this, but the fish did taste a touch fishy – it was probably on its last day of being serve-able.
.
Focaccia with prosciutto and ricotta – this was quite tasty, and the bread was nice and fluffy. Would have loved a bit more flaky salt on the bread, but that’s a minor nitpick.
.
Beet Salad – this was fantastic, and I will order it again the next time we go.
.
Squid ink Cavatelli – good, but needed more salt. Squid ink flavor was very faint - I’d like that to be amped-up, too.
.
Mushroom Norcina – good, but needed more salt; the sausage saved it from being boring, quite frankly.
.
Hospitality was wonderful. Wine list is terribly thin, but corkage is only $25. We opened a 2021 Amorotti Trebbiano (worked wonderfully with the food) and also a 2014 Rhys Swan Terrace Pinot Noir. We gave our waiter (head chef/owner’s brother) a couple generous pours and he very kindly waived both corkage fees.
Between the warm hospitality, delicious starters, convenient location, and kind corkage fee, we will be back (although I might sneak-in some kosher salt in my pocket). The beet salad was crazy-good, and I would have said the same for the hamachi had the fish been a day or two more fresh.
Official announcement for the next Rieslingstudy on Friday, March 20th at Now-Again in Highland Park.
It is going to be a great one!
Took some vegan friends from out of town to Men and Beasts, the new-ish Chinese place in Echo Park, and it was outstanding. We pretty much ordered the whole menu and there were no duds (the biang biang noodles were my favorite) from the appetitizers to the desserts. The avocado yuzu vegan ice cream was crazily good. We had one of the ceremonial oolong teas and it was too subtle for any of us, but if you know how to enjoy such things, the presentation is very detailed and the aesthetics are top notch.
It’s about time!
Very excited for this one!
It says space is limited. Is there a place to RSVP? Are you selling tickets?
I will not be a problem. I will DM you my number in case there is any issue getting in. This is going to be a great one!
Robert,
Would love to RSVP for 2 (myself and wife). Saw up thread that it wouldn’t be a problem to get in?
Looking forward to attending!
All are welcome. No need to RSVP! I will have a lot wine open as will others. Feel free to bring something but not required. We will also have some light food for a small nominal fee that goes to the Chef.
