Durango, Los Alamos, and Santa Fe

We’ll be traveling in this part of the country in the next few weeks and would love some restaurant suggestions! Durango looks like it has some great breweries and brew pubs, but we’d love to hear of anything else. Pig + Fig is on our list while we’re in Los Alamos, but again, any others we should try?

I seem to recall BYOB is not permitted in CO; what about NM?

Izanami is a terrific Japanese restaurant in Santa Fe. Arroyo Vino is also excellent.

Cafe Pasqual’s is an institution in the Santa Fe square and Geronimo is top notch. Both require reservations.

Thanks for the Cafe Pasqual’s recommendation! We had dinner there the other night and everything was delicious - well prepared, nicely presented, and great flavors! The atmosphere was casual, and the service was a great blend of friendly professionalism. While the wine markups were as expected, the overall value was very good.

Make sure to take the train up to Silverton. If it’s warm enough, get off at Chicago Basin and go play with the mountain goats and pikas. Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort would be my other suggestion.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Sante Fe, agree about Cafe Pasqual and Geronimo. We’ve had good lunches at The Compound. Gabriel’s for some good NM/Mexican food. Also the Shed. Years ago the restaurant in the Inn of the Anasazi was great. Don’t know anymore. All pre-COVID visits so a bit dated maybe.

The only places in New Mexico that I know of that allow BYOB would be at restaurants on the reservations. The Prairie Star in Bernalillo NM.
Its 45 minutes south of Santa fe NM. Good food good wine and reservations required.
25$ corkage fee

In Santa Fe for a couple of days. Went to La Boca Santa Fe for lunch, which was excellent. Nice tapas place. Going to Izanami tonight, then Pig + Fig for lunch tomorrow after/around a visit to the Valles Caldera National Preserve, followed by Geronimo for dinner.

Also saw a great exhibition of the work of Pedro Reyes at SITE Santa Fe. Really compelling conceptual/political art, well worth a visit.

Cafe Pasqual’s takes a reservation? I thought they were first come, first served.

The last time we were there about two years ago, we called and made a reservation. We arrived to find a really long line outside so we called their phone number made a reservation while we were in line and then walked up to the front of the line and told them we had a reservation. They took us in and seated us. We did not wait in that very long line.

Interesting. Thanks for that tip. While we’re out and about we’ll swing by and see if we can make one for later in the day. We’ll be there April 24th-28th.

I hope they didn’t change the procedure but we gave it a try and it worked. We will be in France while you are in Santa Fe. Meeting up with the O’Hallorans and the Forrests for our chartered barge trip on the Burgundy canal on the 30th. We are starting and staying in Lyon for a few days before meeting up.

We called and made a reservation for dinner 4 days in advance. Given the length of the queue when we walked by, it didn’t look like they took a reservation for breakfast.

Went to Pig + Fig for lunch. Just average, really nothing special at all. Cute place and friendly people, but there is no need to go out of one’s way for it.

Don’t remember for sure, I don’t think they do. But if you’re not too far away, you can hop over, put your name in, and come back later when a table becomes available. They will text you, if I recall.

We enjoyed our dinner at Pig+Fig when we stayed in Los Alamos last month. I suspect it’s one of, if not the best choice in the area as anything better would likely be way out of the way.

If you are in Durango, drive over to Mesa Verde. If you dare, drive Durango to Ouray over the million dollar highway. There is a Colorado wine tasting room in Ouray that is worth a visit. https://www.westword.com/restaurants/sauvage-spectrum-ouray-14838910
Their pet nats are good.

I think Pasquale’s is best for breakfast. It’s actually one of my top all time places for breakfast and the best I’ve had in SF. Dinner is very good there but there are a lot of other choices in SF for other things on par or better than Pasquale’s. I used to live in the area so I’ve been there many times.
